Senior Air Force Strategic Systems Analyst

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Senior Air Force Strategic Systems Analyst.

Job Summary: Provide Air Force Strategic Systems expertise to lead studies, analyses, and engineering teams supporting Air Force Nuclear Deterrence Operations (AF NDO) platforms, infrastructure, and communications. Serve as the AF Subject Matter Expert (SME) for AF NDO tasks, including Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Systems tasks.


  • Participate as a senior operational and technical SME in a variety of Air Force Strategic Systems projects, studies, and technical working groups. Support the development of cybersecurity strategies and other strategic weapons system command and control deliverables and products. (45%)
  • Lead technical studies to inform system development and sustainment. This includes organizing the study team, defining the study, conducting the study, and developing and delivering technical products and presentations to the sponsor. (45%)
  • Regularly advise and interface with technical groups and program managers, sponsors, and industry partners in the conduct of studies, evaluations, strategies, and policies. (10%)

Required Qualifications: Bachelors degree in engineering, technical management or other relevant discipline. At least 15 years experience in Air Force nuclear weapons systems operations. Expert knowledge and experience with the Minuteman III weapon system. Familiarity with technologies and operational procedures associated with nuclear weapons systems and associated command and control. Demonstrated ability to lead technical studies and teams. Exceptionally strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to interface with sponsor, industry partners, and military personnel on a routine basis.

Desired Qualifications: Advanced degree in systems engineering, engineering, math, military operations, national security or relevant discipline. Experience working with the United States Strategic Command. 25 years experience in military nuclear operations, strategic communications systems, and operational procedures. DoD acquisition experience. Experience with new DoD program development to include concept development and Pre-Milestone A activities.

Special Working Conditions: Periodic local travel and occasional overnight travel.

Security: Top Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information up to the Top Secret level. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
