Senior Actuation and Control Engineer

Introduction:

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Senior Actuation and Control Engineer.

Job Summary:

Lead task planning and execution in the areas of missile control actuation system design / development, modeling / simulation, test / evaluation and flight test data analysis for missile system upgrades and new system development. Work with team members at JHU/APL and industry partners to develop, test and prototype advanced control actuation systems and special test equipment for aerospace and terrestrial applications. Define hardware performance specifications and evaluate design and performance of control actuation systems in ground and flight tests.

Duties:

1.Lead efforts to design, configure, program and operate laboratory special test equipment, data acquisition & control equipment and sensors to control test execution and collect data in laboratory tests to make precision measurements (30%)

2.Develop hardware test plans & procedures, execute tests in a laboratory environment, and evaluate resulting test data in support of aerospace control actuation and electric power distribution system performance characterization and model validation (30%)

3.Model, simulate and validate high-fidelity physics-based electromechanical actuation system models through test and evaluation of modeled hardware (10%)

4.Participate in the design, integration and test of electromechanical fixtures used to test and evaluate missile control actuation systems (10%)

5.Analyze and evaluate flight and ground test data and present findings in presentations and memoranda (10%)

6.Support efforts defined by Actuator Test Facility (ATF) Manager related to schedule development, resource allocation and facility upgrades (10%)

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical or electrical engineering and 8 years of experience related to control actuation systems. Familiarity with computer-aided engineering design and evaluation tools including Matlab / Simulink or LabVIEW. Coursework or experience programming in C . Excellent interpersonal, communication, logical reasoning and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to lead moderately-sized teams/efforts. Must have ability to obtain a Secret clearance.

Desired Qualifications:

Master’s Degree or equivalent in mechanical or electrical engineering, 10 years of experience related to actuation system testing and successful track-record running medium-sized teams, efforts, or facilities. Coursework or experience in control systems, vibration/structures, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics. Basic understanding of analog and digital electronics. Familiarity with computer-aided engineering design and evaluation tools such as Pro-E, dSPACE, xPC Target, ORCAD Capture, PSpice Layout, Xilinx FPGA design tools. Current TOP SECRET clearance.

Special Working Conditions: Occasional travel required for meetings, field tests and related activities. Some foreign travel may also be required.
