RF Electrical Engineer
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC.
Design, develop, and test RF, microwave, mm-wave, and digital systems that support analog and digital photonic systems. Conduct analysis of relevant data and participate in system design activities. Formally document work in sponsor briefings and reports, academic journals, and conference presentations.
Design and develop electrical systems hardware based on components such as amplifiers, mixers, microcontrollers, lasers, modulators, photodiodes, and passive components (30%).
Support evaluation of optical, electrical, and RF hardware through benchtop testing using optical test equipment, bit error rate tester, spectrum analyzer, network analyzer, and other test equipment (35%).
Design prototype systems and conduct critical experiments (20%).
Develop and document formal and informal requirements to support design and test activity (5%).
Develop test plans to verify performance against requirements (5%)
- Document work in formal and informal technical reports, including presentations, conference proceedings, and journal articles (5%)

- B.S. degree in electrical engineering, physics, optics or closely related field with 3 years of experience in engineering
- Experience with optical and microwave test and measurement equipment
- Familiarity with MATLAB and LabVIEW
- Desire to contribute to development programs focusing on innovative optical/RF subsystems
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Active Secret or ability to obtain one.
- M.S. or Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering, physics, optics, or closely related field with 1 years of experience
- Experience with radio over fiber systems, photonic analog-to-digital conversion, and/or mode-locked lasers
- Experience modeling optical systems in MATLAB
- Experience with signal processing algorithms
Special Working Conditions: Willingness to travel up to 20%.
