Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RTD&E) Engineer
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an RDT&E Engineer.
The staff member will contribute to research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) of systems aimed at detecting, classifying, tracking, and mitigating physical threats to civilian and military targets from asymmetric warfare tactics (e.g. terrorism, insurgencies).
Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):
Planning, execution, and documentation of laboratory and field tests to assess system performance and ascertain areas for improvement (50%)
Identification, integration, and deployment of systems in laboratory and field environments (40%)
- Development of system requirements and concepts through sponsor and stakeholder interactions (10%)

B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Math, or closely related field with 1-3 years of professional experience. General knowledge of laboratory test planning, execution, and documentation. Experience with general purpose test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and spectrum analyzers. Experience performing statistical data analysis using tools such as such as Excel or Matlab. Experience integrating wired and/or wireless sensor networks. Excellent organizational and communication (written and spoken) skills.
M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Math, or closely related field with 3-5 years of professional experience. Experience with software development in C, C#, C , Java, and/or Python. Demonstrated experience planning, conducting, and documenting lab/field tests of screening systems for people, cargo, and/or vehicles. Demonstrated experience developing systems for threat detection, classification, and tracking (such as infrared, x-ray, LIDAR, RADAR, millimeter wave, terahertz, spectroscopic)
Special Working Conditions: Staff member may require occasional travel to CONUS sites for site surveys or field testing (up to 15%).
Security: Secret Clearance is required. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
