Real-time Software Engineer

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC.

Job Summary:

Join a cutting-edge real-time systems modeling and simulation development team in support of various Air and Missile Defense (AMD) efforts with a specific focus on innovation and incorporating powerful, new technologies into ever-evolving software frameworks. Apply software engineering expertise to the design, development, and enhancement of real-time modeling and simulation systems for use in the development, testing, and evaluation of advanced Network Centric Target Tracking and Identification Systems. Integrate real-time modeling and simulation systems into Naval and Joint Training operations to support operator and fleet training objectives.

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

  • Design and implement modeling and simulation (M&S) and graphical user interface software using C/C and Qt on UNIX based platforms in a real-time environment.
  • Develop strong understanding of the tactical systems under test.
  • Participate in the development and execution of modeling and simulation Verification and Validation (V&V) process.
  • Analyze system specifications and requirements and translate to software development tasks to fully exercise and test system operational performance
  • Document design, activities, and results with memos, internal reports, and external publications and present work to sponsors as needed.

Required Qualifications:

B.S. degree in computer engineering, computer science, or closely related discipline. A minimum 1 year experience in software development utilizing C, C . Ability to work effectively under pressure on a wide variety of tasks. Ability to work independently and/or in small groups. Willing to travel to meetings with sponsors and to field sites as needed. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to obtain a Secret clearance.

Desired Qualifications:

M.S. degree in computer engineering, computer science, or closely related discipline. One or two years of experience with real-time systems; software development; and the design, integration, and testing of complex hardware/software systems. Experience with modeling and simulation software, graphical user interface development, data analysis, and the use of Unix-based systems in a real-time environment.

Special Working Conditions:

Occasional travel to sponsor and contractor facilities to support program activities will be required.
