Post-doctoral Researcher, Designer Electromagnetic Materials

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC.

Job Summary:

The Research and Exploratory Development Department (REDD) at APL has a growing R&D initiative to pursue design and synthesis of innovative electromagnetic materials, specifically 2D materials, thin-film phase change materials, topological insulators, and optical metamaterials for sensing, communications, and other defense and security applications. The expanding field of 2D materials, single or few atomic layer materials which derive their extraordinary electrical properties through unique surface states and electronic band structure, promises to provide amazing electronic capabilities to significantly impact the domains of microelectronics, energy conversion, and sensing. The successful candidate would work and communicate closely and effectively with the materials R&D team to conceptualize new materials and research projects, propose new ideas to sponsors, perform tasking on a variety of research efforts, and ensure all tasks are performed to extremely high standards.

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

  • Conduct innovative R&D in designer electromagnetic materials. Duties include, but are not limited to growth of 2D materials via molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), optical, electrical and mechanical characterization, and the facilitation, operation, and maintenance of laboratory equipment. (60%)
  • Communicate daily with project teams and leadership on materials development and characterization activities to support programmatic needs. Participate in discussion of ideas, options, and approaches. Report work progress in both oral and written form. (10%)
  • Independently pursue research in 2D materials under the mentorship and supervision of APL staff members and formulate and manage projects from conceptualization and proposal-writing through the final delivery of successful results or prototypes to meet our customer needs. (25%)
  • Contribute to sponsor briefings and proposals, publish original research in this area, and present the work at academic and technical conferences. (5%)

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in materials science, physics, chemistry, mechanical or electrical engineering, or related field, with dissertation work related to 2D materials and thin film growth.
  • Hands-on MBE experience in the growth of non-graphene 2D materials and vision to assemble 2D materials within 3D structures and devices.
  • Experience conducting thin film materials characterization and analysis techniques such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, optical and scanning electron microscopy.
  • Ability to self-direct new research paths based on results and propose new ideas.
  • Organizational skills to maintain laboratory process inventories and notebooks.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office to include Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Good oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with MOCVD growth of materials.
  • Experience in compound semiconductor materials growth using MBE.
  • Experience in analytical or computational materials science modeling and application of theory in guiding experimentation in the area of design of custom 2D materials with novel properties.
  • Experience with lab data acquisition and analysis tools such as Labview and Matlab.

Special Working Conditions:

Occasional travel can be necessary for other purposes (conferences, sponsor visits, etc.) after initial work assignment.
