Post Doctoral Researcher - Trace Detection Scientist

We are seeking a post-doctoral physical scientist with the interest and initiative to lead a diverse set of trace effluent transport, collection, processing, and analysis investigations. You should possess significant experience in WMD production and testing processes, and their effluents; the environmental transport of such materials; and/or the techniques and processes for preparation and analysis of ultra-trace quantities of said samples.
In this role, you will help develop and support research projects and new initiatives for several government sponsors focused on detecting and characterizing processing and testing activities. You will be an integral part of a core team of scientists and a research program focused on developing novel techniques in trace detection, ultra-trace sample processing, and applications for using these materials as indicators of a variety of illicit activities. Additionally, you may provide support to ongoing efforts in test and evaluation, and analytical analyses.
Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):
1. Conduct scholarly research and development programs in pursuit of advancing ultra-trace detection, analysis, sample processing, and application development technologies. Documentation, publications, and technical presentations expected. (70%)
2. Manage and/or support test and evaluation activities, and the maintenance and operations of the trace analysis laboratory. (20%)
3. Pursue research opportunities to grow the ultra-trace detection and related programs at APL. Write and contribute to proposals to federal government sponsors and sponsor engagement activities. (10%)

Recent PhD in physics, analytical chemistry, or related discipline with experience in sample handling, sample preparation, or analytical instrumentation for ultra-trace analysis; demonstrated expertise in trace effluent transport and detection relevant to national security applications; US citizenship and ability to obtain a Department of Defense security clearance.
Familiarity with federal sponsors and monitoring programs in nuclear forensics and the international CTBTO program; experience with advanced analytical equipment and detection systems including AMS; interest in and/or ability to attract research funding from federal sponsors; active or current DoD security clearance.
