PNT Design, Integration and Test Engineer

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is currently looking to add a Design, Integration and Test Engineer with a focus on position, navigation and timing (PNT) to our team. This position will join our RF Engineering & Development group within the Air and Missile Defense Sector.

Position Duties:

  1. Opportunity to work directly with stakeholders to understand their mission level PNT challenges & issues and provide technical recommendations for advanced and alternative PNT systems that can transition into operational capabilities. (10%)
  2. Provide technical oversight or directly perform responsibilities spanning all phases of the engineering life cycle, including requirements analysis, design, integration, verification, and documentation. (20%)
  3. Development and validation of various signal processing algorithms to support M&S system analysis or direct implementation in digital signal processors for use as rapid prototypes or product solutions. Primary areas of interest are Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers and radios, multiple sensor fusion for navigation systems, GPS Anti-Jam and Anti-Spoofing techniques, and other classified areas. (20%)
  4. Work with stakeholders to develop PNT test plans and roadmaps as well as identification and development of capabilities needed to evaluate PNT systems in 6DOF simulations, Hardware-In-the-Loop (HWIL) facilities, or field/flight test activities that will typically be conducted under complex, contested signal environments. (20%)
  5. Perform system engineering tasks including proposals and conceptual development for current and future US military PNT systems. (10%)
  6. Support GPS receiver and PNT system testing at field test sites and at external ground test facilities. (10%)
  7. Document and present performance evaluation and analysis results to colleagues, US military sponsors and other customers (10%)

  • MS degree in Electrical Engineering with 2 years of relevant experience. Experience with military GPS receiver and PNT systems tailored towards alternative or assured PNT applications.
  • Applicants must have an active Secret Clearance to be considered
  • Demonstrated knowledge of signal processing algorithms for radio-navigation with a focus on GPS systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of anti-jam and anti-spoof techniques and technologies. Demonstrated knowledge of principles of navigation, including inertial navigation, aided navigation, and Kalman filtering.
  • Knowledge of GPS/navigation system test methodology, requirements, and methods tailored to evaluate the risk and resiliency of the PNT systems under test.
  • Proficiency with C/C , MATLAB/Simulink, VHDL, and experience with real-time control software architectures supporting HWIL evaluations.

Desired Qualifications:
  • MS degree in Electrical Engineering with 10 years of operational experience with GPS receivers and integrations with host and platform systems
  • Experience with the integration and use of RF signals (including GPS, GNSS, pseudolite & other RF signals) and other sensor inputs in support of maintaining accurate, reliable PNT information in contested environments.
  • Experienced with GPS or RF receiver anti-jam techniques and technologies. Knowledge of PNT Electronic Counter Measures (ECM) threats and experience with countermeasures against Navigation Warfare (NAVWAR), Cyber, or Electronic Warfare (EW). Knowledge of developing and emerging PNT technologies from experience, industry, or academia.
