Physical Oceanographer/Atmospheric Scientist

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Physical Oceanographer/Atmospheric Scientist.

Job Summary: This position is for a Physical Oceanographer or Atmospheric Scientist with a background spanning mesoscale to small-scale processes in the coupled atmosphere/ocean system. Selected candidate will work in a team environment on multiple projects of national importance, providing the opportunity to work with a group of dedicated professionals from varied technical backgrounds. The group is involved in studies of atmospheric and ocean processes with an emphasis on remote sensing and air-sea interactions. It is required that a candidate with an Atmospheric Science background have a research background in atmospheric/oceanic interactions and ocean processes. Work typically involves analysis and interpretation of data from in situ sensors, oceanographic and atmospheric prediction models, and the use of end-to-end modeling tools used to characterize the atmosphere/ocean environment.


  • Develop and apply knowledge of atmospheric/ocean physics to problems concerning in situ and remote sensing systems. (30%)
  • Collect and assess environmental data related to upcoming tests or for model assessments. New analysis techniques will be developed and new data sources will be obtained as needed to support the environmental assessment goals. (30%)
  • Develop and maintain an expertise in numerical weather prediction and environmental ocean modeling including analysis of data products from operational and research models. (20%)
  • Analyze data and compare results with analytical and numerical model predictions. (20%)

Required Qualifications: PhD in physical oceanography, atmospheric sciences, ocean engineering, geophysical fluid dynamics or other related field. Well-developed computer programming skills applicable to scientific analysis (e.g., MATLAB, FORTRAN). Relevant experience to include data analysis relevant to air-sea interactions, small and mesoscale atmosphere/ocean processes and a strong background in statistics and signal processing. Strong oral communication skills.

Desired Qualifications: Experience analyzing output from operational and research numerical weather prediction codes and ocean models. Operational meteorology and real-time oceanographic analysis in support of field test support.

Special Working Conditions: Some travel and working in closed areas required.

Security: Top Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for an SSBI and access to classified information. Preference for current SSBI. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
