Personnel Security Specialist


The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Personnel Security Specialist.

Job Summary: Prepare and process security clearance requests, operate badging system, operate electronic fingerprinting equipment, and other security clearance processing duties as required.


Perform personnel security clearance coordination and processing activities. 60%

Perform fingerprinting and badging services. 15%

Update personnel security systems, records and databases, to include SIMS, Service Now, SWFT, and JPAS. 15%

Interact and coordinate with APL Staff, investigators, DOHA, DSS, DMDC and PSMO-I. 10%

Required Qualifications: A minimum of 4 years of administrative experience largely comprised of work related to personnel security or clearance investigation processing. This includes, but is not limited to initiating and tracking security clearance actions through to completion, processing periodic reinvestigations using JPAS and eQip, operational familiarity with Secure Web Fingerprint Transmission (SWFT) electronic fingerprinting equipment and processes, and an ability to address customer security clearance questions and concerns. Must be a self-starter who will maintain a positive attitude and contribute to team goals, supporting an ongoing positive, customer-focused culture aimed at finding solutions to problems. Able to work independently, or with little supervision. Excellent customer service skills are absolutely necessry. Strong interpersonal skills that require assessing and understanding the situation from the customer’s perspective, then effectively delivering the appropriate message. Good written and oral communications skills. Must possess the highest standards of protecting privacy act information. Recognize and develop solutions to complex problems, which may require cross-departmental coordination and cooperation. Initiative and persistence in pursuing administrative needs, meeting quick turnaround demands, and problem-solving. Must be proficient with MS Office Suite products (e.g. Excel, Word and Outlook)

Desired Qualifications: Knowledge of (or ability to rapidly learn): JHU/APL staff, sponsors and programs; APL practices and procedures to include Security Procedures and Policies. Understanding and experience using SIMS database. Some college preferred.

Security: Top Secret required. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
