Navigation System Analyst/Engineer

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC. is seeking an Navigation Systems Analyst/Engineer.

Job Summary:

Perform Engineering and Analysis to develop a modern, system of systems approach to Navigation on US Navy platforms.

Duties:

  • Apply systems engineering principles to develop strategic roadmaps for afloat and submarine navigation enclaves. Identify performance, operational and interface requirements, develop phasing and test plans, identify future navigation capabilities and responses to emerging challenges. Interface with US Navy sponsors, contracting organizations, and ships' crews. (50%)
  • Perform technical analysis to validate navigation system requirements and performance against the requirements. Assess proposed system changes for impact on performance requirements. (20%)
  • Support navigation system testing at field test sites and at-sea on US Navy surface ships and submarines. (10%)
  • Provide technical support in support of sponsor-driven positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) initiatives. Conduct studies of PNT architecture, algorithms, and operational concepts. Provide engineering assessments and technical analysis of proposed PNT designs. (10%)
  • Document and present performance evaluation and analysis results to colleagues, US Navy sponsors and other customers. Provide debriefs and training for ships' crews. (10%)

Bachelor's degree in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, or other relevant technical degree, or equivalent relevant experience. 2 years' of relevant experience interfacing with US Navy organizations and industry partners on technical programs. Demonstrated analytical ability and experience performing system engineering tasks on complex systems. Capability to work independently and in support of a team. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

MS in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering or equivalent relevant experience. 5 years' experience with surface or submarine operations and US Navy navigation systems. Knowledge of the principles of inertial navigation, timing, and sensor integration. Familiarity with various navigation sensors such as GPS, radar, fathometers, and speed logs.

Special Working Conditions: Some travel, including opportunities to support special tests at test sites and at sea.

Security: Secret clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information up to the Secret level. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
