Navigation, Guidance and Control Systems Analyst

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Navigation, Guidance and Control Systems Analyst.

Job Summary: Apply knowledge of control and estimation theory to devise, model, simulate, and analyze hypersonic flight vehicle guidance, navigation and control systems, and assess their impact on overall weapon system performance.

Duties:

  • Develop six-degree-of-freedom (6DoF) digital simulation models and computer code for various components of existing, next-generation or advanced guided flight vehicles for ballistic and hypersonic strike systems. (30%)
  • Develop, implement, and assess new guidance and flight control algorithms for next-generation guided flight vehicles to meet anticipated performance requirements. (20%)
  • Conduct engineering analysis, studies and performance assessments using the aforementioned M&S tools. (30%)
  • Assess the performance of existing missile NG&C subsystems; develop, implement and assess potential improvements to these algorithms. (10%)
  • Participate in or propose internal research and development projects that address performance gaps in current or soon-to-be-fielded weapons systems. (10%)

Required Qualifications: M.S. in aerospace, electrical, or mechanical engineering or other related technical discipline. Coursework and experience in control systems, state estimation, modeling and simulation of dynamic systems. 1-3 years of experience developing dynamic simulations using high-level languages such as Fortran, C , MATLAB, or Java. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to function as part of a team.

Desired Qualifications: Ph.D. in electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering. Coursework or experience in system optimization, advanced (optimal, nonlinear, stochastic) control and estimation theory. 3-8 years of experience with 6DoF modeling and simulation. Experience evaluating the performance of flight control systems. Functional knowledge of GPS/INS navigation systems. Experience with collaborative software development and object-oriented software design techniques. Experience using MATLAB and Simulink.

Special Working Conditions: Position requires occasional travel for meetings and working at various locations within APL. Also can include travel to contractor facilities.

Security: Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information up to the Secret level. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
