The John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Multimedia Computer Specialist.
Job Summary: The APL Education Center is seeking a Multimedia Computer Specialist to provided audio-visual and computer support for various aspects of classroom and distance education. The APL Center is a collaborative effort between APL and the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering for delivering graduate-level education through the Engineering for Professionals program (EP). The position requires extensive interactions with instructors and students in both virtual live and partnership settings at APL, as well as, providing audio-visual and computer support to the overall EP program.
- Support growing audiovisual and communication demands in the Virtual Live (VL) [combination of a fact-to-face classroom with a synchronous on-line component] environment including (35%):
a) training instructors in Adobe Connect, Zoom, JH Box, etc.
b) set-up Adobe connect sessions and Zoom meetings
c) maintain VL equipment (cameras, computers, conference phones)
d) post recordings and connection information to Blackboard
e) record all VL classes
f) attend VL classes (during first 2 weeks) to eliminate (minimize) any instructor/student issues with connecting
- Support on-going partnership instructional activities including (35%):
a) maintain classroom distance learning equipment (Polycoms, Wacoms, computers). Update software as needed.
b) assist instructors and guest lecturers loading their AV media
c) record all classes and post to Blackboard
d) schedule partnership classrooms
e) post instructor office hours to Blackboard
f) handle Polycom contracts
g) troubleshoot AV or computer problems during class
- Support EP and the APL Education Centers growing and evolving needs for multimedia (30%)
a) shoot and edit videos (program highlights, interviews, classes)
b) support use of Blackboard, Camtasia, JH Box
c) answer multimedia questions from students, faculty, EP and APL Education Center staff.

Bachelor's degree with emphasis on visual communication and multimedia applications including distance learning methodologies. At least 3 years experience in the use of computer learning tools including computers, Wacom tablets, digital cameras and conference phone systems; or 7 years of experience in lieu of Bachelor's degree. Demonstrated ability to set-up and use key videoconferencing tools such as or similar to Adobe Connect and Zoom, and learning management systems such as or similar to Blackboard, Adobe Connect, Zoom, Drop boxes, etc. Hands-on experience in digital recording and editing of the recorded media. Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to explain complex technology to a wide range of audiences.
Formal training in digital photography, film making and editing.
Special Working Conditions:
Regular working hours for this position are 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday with a half-hour lunch break. Some pre-planned changes in hours maybe necessary to accommodate special classes or instructional activities. Regular trips to EP's Dorsey Services Center in Elkridge Maryland and/or to the Homewood Campus (Baltimore, Maryland) of the Johns Hopkins University are anticipated.
