Mobile Developer and Reverse Engineer (TS/SCI w/ Poly reqd)
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Mobile Developer and Reverse Engineer.
Seeking a resourceful and innovative software engineer with experience developing Android or iPhone mobile platform applications at all layers including the native system layer and OS kernel level for defense and intelligence community applications. Work with small teams of engineers and scientists who value innovation, drive, timely execution, and positive results.
Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):
- Work problems of national importance by developing leading edge techniques and solutions that leverage cellular platforms to create novel capabilities in an environment where creativity and ingenuity is encouraged and appreciated. Design software/firmware at every level of the device operating environment to develop novel applications. (60%)
- Dissect and reverse engineer existing code and binaries, to understand device operations and communication interfaces with a focus on security vulnerabilities. (30%)
- Share knowledge by clearly articulating ideas through papers and presentations to technical staff, management and Government decision makers. Take advantage of opportunities to participate in working groups, sponsor meetings, proposal writing, and conferences. (10%)

BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field with 3 years of experience in software engineering or firmware development. Strong C/C development skills, hands-on, practical knowledge developing software for Android, iPhone or other cellular devices and a solid understanding of Linux/Unix operating system internals. Working knowledge of ARM assembly language and desire to analyze and reverse engineer code in order to gain a deep technical understanding of operating system-level software components. Demonstrate good interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and with teams. Must have good written and oral communications, and good organizational and time management skills. TS/SCI with full scope/lifestyle polygraph security clearance.
MS/PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field with at least 5 years of experience in software engineering including smart phone development at all layers of the Android or iPhone operating environment. Strong C/ARM assembly development skills, familiarity with publically available hacker tools and software crash analysis and reverse engineering skills highly desirable. Prior experience working with Government agencies is highly desirable.
Special Working Conditions: Some local travel to sponsor sites may be required.
Security: Applicant selected will be subject to a Government security clearance investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship. Must be eligible for DOD clearance requiring background investigation and/or polygraph examination. Preference for current SSBI.
