Mission Planning Systems Engineer

Introduction: The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC, is seeking a Mission Planning Systems Engineer.

Job Summary: Provide systems engineering expertise and technical leadership to support the concept definition, requirements derivation, prototyping and demonstration of new mission planning systems.


  • Apply systems engineering expertise to define requirements for new mission planning systems. Focus areas include requirements development and analysis, concept/technology evaluation/development, capability definition, prototyping (with software team) and demonstration, risk assessments, and system architectures development/analysis. (60%)
  • Coordinate between technical subject matter experts, software developers, and operational users to define mission needs, prototype requirements, and overall system concept. (20%)
  • Regularly interface with technical groups and program managers, sponsors, senior military officers, and industry partners in the conduct of systems engineering and studies. (20%)

Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or related technical field. At least five years systems engineering technical experience, with at least three years in the design, development and evaluation of command and control or mission planning systems. Demonstrated ability effectively interfacing with software developers. Experience planning and conducting capability demonstrations for sponsors and senior military officers. Experience deriving requirements and developing system specifications. Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to successfully interface with sponsor, industry partners, and senior military personnel on a routine basis.

Desired Qualifications: Advanced degree in systems engineering, engineering, physics, or related discipline. DoD acquisition experience. Experience with DoD Architecture Framework (DoDAF) artifact development. Experience with strategic mission planning processes and systems. Experience with agile development processes. Experience leading technical teams and studies. Understanding of strategic weapons systems. Experience in systems engineering for missile systems.

Special Working Conditions: Regular travel will be required to US Strategic Command (Omaha, NE).

Security: Top Secret/SCI Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information up to the Top Secret level. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
