Missile Guidance, Navigation, and Control Engineer
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC. We are seeking a Missile Guidance, Navigation, and Control Engineer with expertise in guidance and control design and implementation, high fidelity modeling and simulation, state estimation, and hypersonic missile system performance analysis.
Job Summary: Apply advanced guidance and control theory on a variety of concepts, including hypersonic missiles, to solve complex technical problems for simulation and flight test applications. Develop high fidelity simulations to analyze performance, utilizing an understanding of vehicle and trajectory dynamics. Use optimization theory in algorithm development as well as dynamics analysis.
1.Develop high fidelity simulations of hypersonic flight systems, utilizing a broad knowledge of flight dynamics, navigation, guidance, and control. Analyze trajectory and vehicle dynamics using simulation. Apply optimization theory to aid in understanding of performance as well as in algorithm development. (50%)
2.With application to simulation and flight tests:
- Design and assess the performance of guidance algorithms for hypersonic missiles to be used in simulation and for flight tests. (20%)
- Research and develop advanced control topology for highly coupled flight systems, utilizing classic and modern control theory for stability assessment. (20%)
- Integrate state estimation approaches on a wide variety of systems and assess impact on guidance and control approaches. (10%)

- B.S. in Aerospace Engineering or other related technical discipline, and at least 2 years relevant professional level experience to include strong systems analysis skills.
- Experience in building physics based models along with specifying algorithms of those models for software engineers.
- Experience with MATLAB, C or other programming language.
- Exposure to Simulink and familiarity with simulation verification/validation processes.
- Background in developing guidance and control algorithms for hypersonic missile systems for both simulation and flight test.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Must work effectively in a team environment and be able to multi-task and support multiple development projects concurrently.
- The ideal candidate should have strong initiative, creativity, breadth of experience, and a desire to learn.
- M.S. in Aerospace Engineering or other related technical discipline.
- Fundamental knowledge of linear and nonlinear control methodologies as well as a background in autonomous system guidance and control.
- A broad understanding of mathematics and optimization theory is also desirable. A general understanding of software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop development.
- Ability to research and develop expertise in a variety of systems (e.g., missiles, submarines, UAVs, UUVs, balloons).
- Familiarity with the agile development process.
Special Working Conditions: Some US and foreign travel will be required, not likely to exceed a few trips per year.
Security: Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information up to the Secret level. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
