Missile Guidance and Control Engineer
Introduction: The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC. We are seeking a Missile Guidance and Control Engineer with expertise in guidance and control design and implementation, high fidelity modeling and simulation, state estimation, and advanced missile system performance analysis.
Job Summary: Apply advanced guidance and control theory to a variety of concepts, including hypersonic missiles, to solve complex technical problems for simulation and flight test applications. Develop and employ high fidelity simulations to analyze performance, utilizing an understanding of vehicle and trajectory dynamics.
1. Design and analyze control approaches for complex missile systems, leveraging modern synthesis and analysis methods. Be able to understand unique plant dynamics and select appropriate control strategies, taking broad initiative to implement and analyze approaches with application to onboard use. (30%)
2. Research and formulate missile guidance algorithms for a variety of concepts. Leverage understanding of system dynamics, trajectory optimization, and modern literature to develop algorithms suitable for simulation and onboard use. (30%)
3. Develop and employ high fidelity simulations of hypersonic flight systems, utilizing knowledge of flight dynamics, navigation, guidance, and control. Analyze trajectory and vehicle dynamics using simulation. (30%)
4. Interact with sponsors, developing high level communications to relay important performance results. (10%)

- B.S. in Aerospace Engineering or other related technical discipline, and at least 5 years relevant professional level experience to include strong guidance and control analysis skills.
- Significant background in the development and analysis of control techniques with broad exposure to both modern and classical design, synthesis, and stability analysis.
- Experience in building physics based models, applying system dynamics and equations of motion in a simulation environment
- Experience with MATLAB, C++ or other programming language.
- Exposure to Simulink and familiarity with simulation verification/validation processes.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Must work effectively in a team environment and be able to multi-task and support multiple development projects concurrently.
- The ideal candidate should have strong initiative, creativity, breadth of experience, and a desire to learn.
MS or PhD in Aerospace Engineering or other related technical discipline.
- Experience with guidance, control, and simulation analysis for hypersonic missiles
- Exposure to state estimation and onboard missile navigation
- Background in mathematics and optimization theory.
- General understanding of software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop development.
- Familiarity with the agile development process.
Special Working Conditions: Some US and foreign travel will be required, not likely to exceed a few trips per year.
Security: Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information up to the Secret level. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
