Missile Defense: Systems Engineer

Introduction:

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a system engineering analyst for Air and Missile Defense applications.

Job Summary:

  1. Utilize tools to analyze weapon system capabilities and to assist in the development of future weapon system requirements. Participate in design and requirements documentation reviews. Present comments from reviews and design proposals to the program sponsors and the surface warfare community (30%).

  2. Provide subject matter expertise while conducting research, studies, and analysis on current and future weapons system performance. Provide supporting data and associated recommendations to advise program sponsors (20%).

Provide technical leadership and direction pertaining to the systems engineering, test and evaluation, and technology maturation of the surface warfare mission area and associated sensor systems for various government sponsors (20%).

  • Participate in the development of analysis tools written in MATLAB, Python, C , or other programming language (20%)

  • Deliver formal presentations to sponsors and engineering community. Effectively communicate proposed concepts/solutions and analysis results. Produce documentation to capture concept definitions, requirements, analysis results, and technical recommendations (10%).

    Required Qualifications:

    • BS in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or equivalent.
    • Must have at least four years of professional experience in systems engineering and ability to develop innovative solutions to research problems.
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
    • Proficient in scientific programming (MATLAB, C/C , Java, Python).
    • Demonstrated ability to both work independently with little guidance and direction, and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
    • Ability to obtain SECRET clearance.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • MS in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or equivalent.
    • Three years experience conducting combat system analysis.
    • Experience with Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense system, or other Missile Defense Systems.
    • Current SECRET clearance.

    Special Working Conditions [Travel, working in closed areas, extended hours]: Local travel within DC/Northern VA as required for sponsor meetings and technical interchange meetings. Occasional travel (3-4 times year) to sponsor meetings, contractor sites or test facilities outside of DC/Northern VA region, sometimes requiring air travel.

    Security: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
