Materials Test Engineer
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is actively seeking a Materials Test Engineer. APL is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC.
To serve as a member of an applied materials research team focused on developing engineered material solutions in support of APL programs. Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):
Provide high level engineering and hands on support to materials research activities. Work collaboratively with task leads to develop, maintain and improve procedures, methods and instrumentation. Design and conduct experimental evaluations, processing and characterization research, and analysis aligned with the group, department and laboratory strategy. Analyze and interpret results and document in status reports/updates and give presentations as required by principal investigators and sponsors. (40%)
Maintain and operate the organization's centralized x-ray computed tomography instruments and software for reconstruction and image analysis. Develop, apply and document new techniques for non-destructive characterization of materials and material microstructure. Research areas include image processing and advanced use of computed tomography for novel new materials and applications. Stay abreast of evolving NDE technologies. Propose, justify, demonstrate and grow future in-house measurement capabilities. (40%)
Conduct independent materials and measurement research, aligned with the group, department and laboratory strategy. (10%)
- Learn and build proficiency in other non-destructive and destructive characterization methods employed within the organization for evaluation of polymers, metals, ceramics, adhesives and/or electronic materials. (10%)
- BS in Materials Science, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering.
- At least 5 years professional experience in a materials development or laboratory test environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the application of standard and custom test methods to solve materials performance problems.
- Skill in communicating technical information (methods, results, interpretations, limitations) directly to the customer.
- Ability to work independently, exercising good technical judgment.
- Interpersonal skills to work as a member of a team.
- Interest in pursuit of independent research projects aligned with the organization's broad application topic areas.
- MS in Materials Science, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent years of professional experience.
- Technical depth in Electromagnetics and Photonics.
- Demonstrated experience as expert practitioner of digital radiography (DR) and computed tomography (CT).
- Technical expertise in Forensic engineering experience in identifying the origin and root causes of failures.
Special Working Conditions:
- This job summary and listing of duties is for the purpose of describing the position and its essential functions at time of hire and may change over time.
- This position will require intermittent travel as needed to support field tests, sponsor briefs and technical conferences.
- This position will require include intermittent lifting and moving of test equipment, not to exceed 15-20 pounds.
Eligibility for a Secret clearance is required. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. Citizenship.
