Maritime Mechanical Engineer
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC, is seeking a Maritime Mechanical Engineer.
Job Summary: Design, develop, install and maintain electro-mechanical hardware for various system development projects. Develop detail design packages for use by the Navy and other branches of the military. Conduct analysis of mechanical designs to establish compliance with design requirements. Provide liaison with program/project managers. Communicate with vendors during design, estimation, and fabrication of components..
- Develop detailed design packages using SolidWorks, CREO or other design tools as appropriate.(50%)
- Conduct analysis/testing of mechanical designs. (20%)
- Prepare technical documentation for projects.(15%)
- Work closely with APL shops and external vendors.(10%)
- Develop and present material at design reviews. (5%)

Required Qualifications: BS in Mechanical, Aerospace, Ocean Engineering or Naval Architecture. 3-7 years of relevant working experience in mechanical design, CAD (SolidWorks and/or CREO), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling, stress, and thermal analysis using finite element software, and manufacturing processes. Demonstrated initiative and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment with tight delivery schedules on systems that operate on land, sea, or air. Ability to take a system through the Life-Cycle process. Ability to effectively work and communicate orally and in writing with other engineers, scientists, and technicians as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
Desired Qualifications: MS in Mechanical, Aerospace, Ocean Engineering, or Naval Architecture. Experience with design and integration of autonomous vehicles (UUV's and UAV's), and undersea sensors (acoustic and non acoustic). Experience with MATLAB. Experience with the NAVSEA Temporary Alteration Design Package development. Experience leading project teams.
Special Working Conditions: Occasional CONUS or overseas travel a minimum of two weeks per year. Occasional irregular working hours. Multitasking of work assignments. Working on Navy platforms, and in desert environments..
