IT Systems Administrator

Introduction:

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a highly motivated IT Systems Administrator for the Air and Missile Defense Sector. The Air and Missile Defense Sector creates innovative solutions to our Nation’s most difficult challenges posed by evolving aircraft, missile, and surface threats. Contribute to this mission by joining the Technical Facilities Systems Administration Group (A4G).

Job Summary:

In this role you will support the planning, implementation, and maintenance of Enterprise Information Systems. Working as a member of the System Administration team you will be deploying associated hardware and software to allow APL staff members to carry out sponsor tasking.

Our System Administrators perform daily system monitoring; verify the integrity and availability of hardware, server/system resources, and key processes. Review system and application logs, and verify completion of scheduled jobs such as software updates and security/OS patching.

Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures, research and recommend innovative approaches for system administration tasks, and identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.

Duties:

1. Apply technical expertise to the system administration of Linux, Windows, and Virtualization platforms. Form relationships with facility users, establishing a collaborative approach to facility support. Proactively maintain information systems, applications, and associated equipment in full operational condition. (50%)

2. Support facility growth and enhancement through strategic planning, equipment and software selection. Reconfigure facility infrastructure for new projects and equipment including computer installation, networking, and applications installation (30%)

3. Research current and emerging information technologies and provide recommendations for insertion and integration into existing environments. (15%)

4. Prepare for and provide expertise for annual internal security inspections by APL security staff and also for annual external security inspections by DSS representatives. (5%)

Required Qualifications:

BS in CS, MIS, CE or related field with at least 5 (five) years’ experience in a Windows/Linux/Unix computing environment or at least 10 (ten) years of relevant work experience. Ability to troubleshoot problems in an Enterprise environment as well as strong knowledge of best practices surrounding virtualization to include configuring, maintaining, troubleshooting and supporting VMware, Remote Desktop Services (RDS), and Microsoft Hyper-V. Ability and desire to work well with a wide variety of end-users with differing needs and experience possessing strong organizational skills, ability to work in a team and independently as well as multi-task effectively.

Desired Qualifications:

MS in CS, MIS, CE or related field with at least 10 (ten) years’ experience in Windows/Linux/Unix computer system administration or at least 15 (fifteen) years of relevant work experience. Expertise in managing VMware ESXi 5/6, vCenter, Horizon View 6, CentOS/RedHat Linux, Windows Server 2008/2012, and Windows 7/8. Knowledge of classified computing facility CONOPS to include NISPOM, DSS, or other DOD security requirements. Experience within a heterogeneous Windows/Linux Domain and data center operations to include infrastructure, systems monitoring, and compute clusters.

Special Working Conditions:

Must be able to perform moderate lifting to move computer and network equipment. Some work outside normal working hours and on weekends must be performed for operations and maintenance.

Security:

Must be able to obtain a DoD Secret clearance. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
