Health Systems Data Analyst
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an Analyst to support the National Health Mission Area (NMHA) in its Research & Exploratory Development Department (REDD). The NMHA seeks to revolutionize health through science and engineering in collaboration with partners such as the John Hopkins Enterprise to discover, invent, scale, and disseminate solutions to health and healthcare challenges.
The Health Systems Engineering Group supports the NMHA by retaining technical competencies in systems engineering, software engineering, systems analysis and project management with particular application to healthcare challenges. The successful candidate will be hired into the Health Concepts & Systems Analysis Section of the Group.
The Health Systems Engineering Group is seeking a highly skilled and motivated data analyst/modeler to support its healthcare systems work. The successful candidate will support cross-organizational projects by applying best practices in operations research, predictive analytics/machine learning, modeling & simulation and statistics used in healthcare environments. Additionally, they will serve as a systems analysis on technical product teams re-engineering technologies, information and workflow to improve patient safety and healthcare system reliability.
Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):
- Participate in key technical efforts by applying and tailoring best practices for analysis. Work collaboratively with project teams, end users/stakeholders to understand and analyze health management processes. Work with stakeholders to elicit, document and manage holistic system requirements followed by detailed requirements analysis. Model processes using diagrams, flowcharts, data models and decision aides. Provide technical capability to guide the development of end user solutions including data mining and appropriate statistical evaluation techniques. Contribute to deliverables satisfying sponsor needs consistent with organizational quality standards. (70%)
- Contribute to a climate conducive to intellectual curiosity, creativity, innovation, collaboration, growth, productivity and respect for others. Participate in independent research initiatives to expand or refine capabilities within the Research & Exploratory Development Department and explore related opportunities tied to challenges within institutional departments. (20%)
- Communicate often and effectively with staff, technical supervisors and program managers via internal seminar, colloquia and/or lecture. Participate in technical project reviews, promote operations research, machine learning and mathematics best practices. Publish papers and present study material to appropriate academic/professional communities when appropriate. (10%)

- BS in operations research, information systems, statistics, mathematics, computer science, or related technical field or equivalent years of professional work experience in related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in empirical research, inferential statistics, sensitivity analysis and trade space assessments.
- Minimum of 2 years experience with modeling, data management, data analytics and visualization using market leading tools, including statistical software packages such as MATLAB, SAS, R, JMP.
- Strong coding competencies, including familiarity with Structured Query Language (SQL), Python and/or JAVA
- Familiarity with network/process analysis methods and software.
- Demonstrated skills in leadership, organization and planning.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to travel up to 10%.
- Advanced degrees in mathematics, operations research, epidemiology, statistics, computer science, information systems and/or other technical disciplines.
- Strong statistics background, computer programming skills, familiarity with SPSS, C , C#.
- A broad understanding of current challenges in health management and healthcare systems.
- Experience with simulation tools such as Arena, FlexSim, or Simio.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a multidisciplinary team of technical staff addressing complex problems.
- Published or presented content related to national health provision, assessment or forecasting.
- Exposure to U.S. Military Health System, related vocabulary and data systems
- Active US DOD security clearance
Special Working Conditions:
This position requires a US DOD security clearance and the ability to travel up to 10%.
