The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC.is seeking a Guidance, Navigation and Controls Engineer.

Job Summary: Develop evaluation methodology and software to assess the accuracy and performance of current and future weapon systems. Analyze measurement data and understand/develop the corresponding mathematical models for inertial measurement units (IMU), Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, and other sensor systems (e.g. RADAR). Develop/understand the mathematical algorithms necessary to evaluate guidance and navigation errors using Kalman Filters. Assess designs of future missiles and reentry vehicles. Write weapon system evaluation reports, and participate in technical meetings with sponsors and external organizations.

Duties:

  • Evaluate the accuracy and performance of missiles and reentry vehicles using models, simulations, telemetry data from onboard systems and instrumentation, and off board metric measurements; in particular, inertial navigation system and Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements.(20%)
  • Develop/understand the mathematical models describing measurement data from inertial measurement units, GPS receivers, RADARS, and potentially other measurement systems. Develop/understand the algorithms required to estimate guidance and navigation errors using Kalman Filters.(35%)
  • Write software (primarily Matlab) required to process data from IMUs, GPS receivers, RADARS, and potentially other measurement systems. (35%)
  • Participate in technical meetings and working groups that assess and monitor weapon system performance and that evaluate proposals for future missiles and reentry vehicles and their navigation systems.(5%)
  • Write weapon system evaluation reports and present analysis results at sponsor program reviews.(5%)

  • B.S (or above) in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Relevant experience in one or more of the following areas: inertial navigation, GPS navigation, vehicle trajectory modeling/simulation, estimation theory (e.g. Kalman Filtering).
  • Programming experience required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work and contribute in a team environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Some coursework in the areas of guidance, navigation, dynamics, or controls.
  • Proficiency in Matlab.

Special Working Conditions: Some travel (potentially 1-2 trips per year of duration one week or less).

Security: Secret Clearanceis required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation andmust meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information upto the Secret level. Eligibility requirements include UScitizenship.
