Guidance, Navigation and Control Systems Analyst


The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Guidance, Navigation and Control Systems Analyst.

Job Summary: Apply knowledge of control and estimation theory to devise, model, simulate, and analyze homing missile guidance, navigation and control systems, and assess their impact on overall weapon system performance.


  • Develop, implement, and assess new guidance and flight control algorithms for next-generation guided missiles to meet anticipated performance requirements versus advanced, stressing, threats. (25%)
  • Create six-degree-of-freedom (6DoF) digital simulation models and computer code for various components of existing, next-generation or advanced guided missiles for ballistic missile and cruise missile defense. (25%)
  • Assess the performance of existing flight controls, guidance and navigation systems, and missile autopilots; develop, implement and assess potential improvements to these algorithms. (40%)
  • Participate in or propose internal research and development projects that address performance gaps in current or soon-to-be-fielded weapons systems. (10%)

Required Qualifications:

BS Degree or equivalent in electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering with 3 years of experience in control systems, state estimation, or modeling and simulation of dynamic systems. Proficiency developing in C , Fortran or Java. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to function as part of a team. Ability to obtain a SECRET clearance.

Desired Qualifications:

MS Degree or Ph.D. Degree in electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering. Coursework or experience in system optimization, advanced (optimal, nonlinear, stochastic) control and estimation theory. Experience with 6DoF modeling and simulation or aerodynamically controlled missile systems and/or space systems. Experience with collaborative software development and object-oriented software design techniques. Experience using MATLAB and Simulink. Current SECRET (or above) clearance.

Special Working Conditions: Position requires occasional travel for meetings and working at various locations within APL. Also can include travel to contractor facilities.

Security: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
