Embedded Digital Hardware Engineer
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an Embedded Digital Hardware Engineer.
Apply hardware engineering expertise to the design and development of embedded real-time controllers used for hardware-in-the-loop testing and evaluation of advanced RF sensor, guidance and navigation systems.
Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):
1. Design and implement digital logic subsystems using standard integrated circuits and programmable devices including FPGAs. (50%)2. Analyze system specifications and translate system requirements to hardware task specifications. (25%)3. Document activities and results with memos, internal reports, and external publications. (25%)
Required Qualifications: B.S. degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering. Five to ten years of experience with real-time systems, embedded hardware development, and design/integration/test of complex hardware/software systems. Excellent communication skills and ability to document and publish designs and results. Fluency in hardware description languages (i.e., VHDL, Verilog). Experience with development of FPGAs for standard and custom interfaces, and interfacing with embedded software to control FPGA-based functionality. Experience with using Xilinx and Altera based solutions and toolsets (ISE, Vivado, Quartus, ModelSim). Knowledge and experience with standard interfaces including PCIe, PCI, VMEbus, VPX/OpenVPX, Industry Pack, SPI, I2C, GPIB, 1553, MGTs, and Ethernet.
Desired Qualifications: M.S. degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science. Ten or more years of experience with real-time systems, embedded hardware and software development, and design/integration/test of complex hardware/software systems. Demonstrated ability to lead development teams. Experience in MATLAB, Simulink, Stateflow, HDL Coder, CoreFire, or CoreNext for firmware development. Experience with implementation of DSP algorithms in firmware. Knowledge of RF systems, embedded software, and hardware-in-the-loop test configurations. Proficiency in C/C , device driver development, real-time operating systems, and System-on-Chip (SoC) software/hardware co-design. Experience across multiple applications including RF sensors and systems, radar, guidance, navigation and control.
