Electronic Warfare Systems Engineer

Introduction: The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an Electronic Warfare Systems Engineer.

Job Summary: The candidate will be responsible for technical analysis and demonstrations of advanced radar and electronic warfare (EW) systems. This will include analysis, hardware designing, prototyping, digital signal processing, and system evaluation testing. The candidate should understand the functionality of analog and/or digital systems at a fundamental level, providing in-depth evaluation and/or hardware validation when required.

The candidate will perform high- and low-level systems analysis, developing and integrating new digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, embedded systems software/firmware development, Digital Radio Frequency Memory (DRFM) instrumentation and testing, digital receiver design/testing, RF hardware testing, analog/digital electronics, RF systems integration testing, high-speed networking, wideband RF systems, EW technique development, project management, etc. Ultimately, the candidate will work with or lead a team of engineers who’s goal is to provide a system design, use analysis to predict performance, integrate various sub-system of a prototype into a real-time system, perform laboratory/field/flight testing to assess performance, assist in post-processing data analysis, writing test plans/reports, and present the results to sponsors.


  • Design, develop, and implement new concepts for EW, DRFM, distributed sensing that will involve DSP, software/firmware development, digital receivers, analog/digital electronics, high-speed networking, wideband systems, etc. (60%)
  • Perform systems analysis for design specifications and test results in a laboratory and field-testing environment (25%)
  • Brief, document, and report on testing/integration outcomes. (10%)
  • Analyze emerging technologies and their applications in EW. (5%)

Required Qualifications: MS degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or a closely related discipline with at least 5 year of relevant experience. Working knowledge of digital hardware, digital signal processing, real-time systems, DRFM, software-defined radios, and RF testing equipment. Expertise with VHDL and/or Verilog, RF test equipment, and with several of the following tools: C, C , Python, Object-oriented programming, Chipscope, Matlab/Simulink, and Linux.

Desired Qualifications: PhD in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or a closely related discipline. Experience with embedded systems development on military and/or commercial systems. Familiarity with flight-testing, CUDA, as well as the tools listed above. Experience with Air Force, Navy, and/or other DoD programs.

Special Working Conditions: Periodically travel to government test ranges, working on field/flight testing.

Security: Top Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for an SSBI and access to classified information. Preference for current SSBI. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
