Electrical Engineer


The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an Electrical Engineer.

Job Summary:

The staff member will contribute to prototype systems aimed at detecting, classifying, tracking, and mitigating physical threats to civilian and military targets from asymmetric warfare tactics (e.g. terrorism, insurgencies). The staff member will also contribute to prototype systems for special operations that provide a U.S. asymmetric advantage. Prototypes could include novel sensor platforms, sensor payloads, and countermeasure packages.

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

1. Design, analysis, and integration of prototype systems (30%)

2. Testing and troubleshooting of prototype components and assemblies (30%)

3. Planning, execution, and documentation of laboratory and/or field tests of prototype and operational systems (30%)

4. Development of system requirements and concepts through sponsor and stakeholder interactions (10%)

Required Qualifications:

B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or closely related field with 3-5 years of professional experience. Experience with the design, development, testing, and deployment of analog and digital electronic systems. Experience with general purpose control/ data acquisition hardware and software such as Labview. Experience with general purpose analysis software such as Excel and Matlab. Experience with software development in C, C#, C , Java, and/or Python. Excellent communication (written and spoken) skills.

Desired Qualifications:

M.S. Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or closely related field with 5-8 years of professional experience. Experience with control and data acquisition systems including microcontrollers such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and STMicroelectronics. Experience in analog and digital circuit design and layout (Altium experience preferred). Experience with circuit board, cable, and harness fabrication and assembly. Knowledge in the fields of optics and/or electromagnetics.

Special Working Conditions: Staff member may require occasional travel to CONUS sites for site surveys or field testing (up to 15%)

Security: Secret Clearance is required. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
