The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking Data Scientists. As a Data Scientist at APL, you will get to work with cutting-edge hardware, software and techniques to develop computational algorithms and statistical methods that find information hidden in large volumes of data.
The Large-Scale Analytics Systems Group (QAS) provides critical contributions to some of the nation's greatest information systems challenges today. Candidate will design and develop novel machine learning algorithms and architect massive data stores to solve some of the most complex problems facing the DoD and IC. We are looking for an energetic and creative individual to implement computationally tractable algorithms and to design corresponding data architectures on which to run the algorithms to help analyze large and complex data. The successful candidate will join a growing team of data scientists in a collegiate environment at a university-affiliated research center.
Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):
Develop innovative algorithms for analyzing large-scale and complex data. Create software prototypes. (45%)
Design and develop large-scale graph architectures using technologies like Hadoop and Spark to support analytic algorithms. (45%)
- Present results to both JHU/APL and Sponsor leadership. (10%)

B.S. in Computer Science, Information Science, Mathematics, Physics, Operations Research, or related field. 1-5 years of experience. Experience with statistics, machine learning algorithms, or general algorithm development. Working knowledge of modern large-scale data systems and architectures. Solid software development skills. Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently, outstanding written and oral communications skills, and good organizational skills. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship. Must be eligible for DoD clearance requiring background investigation and/or polygraph examination. Preference for current SSBI.
M.S. or Ph.D. in the disciplines listed above. Working knowledge of state-of-the-art large-scale data approaches and architectures. Experience with software engineering processes and techniques.
Special Working Conditions [Travel, working in closed areas, extended hours]: Some local travel to sponsor sites may be required.
