Cyber Security Engineer


The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an experienced cyber security engineer.

Job Summary: Develop and apply a detailed understanding of computer, network, and cyber security concepts to create and assess novel approaches to solving computer security challenges in an operational environment. Engage with the external community to promote APL's involvement in Penetration Testing, Red Teaming and Cyber training exercises.

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

  • Lead, create, analyze, and assess novel techniques for computer network operations, including characterization of advanced cyber security products. Assess capability performance through testbeds and field evaluation. (40%)
  • Lead the evaluation of the security of networks and network-enabled systems using analysis and empirical testing (30%)
  • Analyze and evaluate the security of computer-enabled systems and mission-relevant software applications (20%)
  • Document and present findings, results, concepts, and recommendations. (10%)

Required Qualifications: BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Cyber Security, Information Security or related fields. 3 years demonstrated experience with computer networks and network protocols; familiarity with Linux systems and information security concepts. Excellent interpersonal skills, outstanding oral and written communication skills, good organizational skills, ability to both lead and work in teams. Active TS/SCI clearance.

Desired Qualifications: 10 years experience in IT administration and/or IT Security. Demonstrated hands-on skills in Penetration Testing, various programming languages (C/C , Java, Python, or the like) and packet capture analysis. Working knowledge of computer network vulnerabilities and exploits. Actively holding, or seeking all of the following external information security certifications: CEH, CISSP, OSCP or OSCE. Active TS/SCI with poly clearance.

Special Working Conditions: Light travel to customer locations is required, working in closed areas and the eventual extended hours during onsite exercise support.

Security: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
