Cyber Security Combat Systems Engineer

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC. is seeking an early professional Cyber Security Combat Systems Engineer.

Job Summary: Provide analysis and Cyber Security Systems Engineering technical expertise and project leadership for projects in the Undersea Warfare and Maritime domains.


  • Develop analysis plans, lead inter/intra organizational teams, conduct analyses, interpret results and develop recommendations for improving threat detection and classification or reducing vulnerability of detection. (30%)
  • Support the system engineering, design and implementation of organic and inherited cyber security controls throughout the system development lifecycle including all program acquisition phases: concept, requirements, design, development, fabrication, test, installation, operation and maintenance. (30%)
  • Quantify efficacy, identify opportunities for improvement or determine requirements for technology alternatives. (20%)
  • Verify and validate vendor cyber security design, architectures and implementation. (10%)
  • Document results in written reports and briefings for both sponsor and analyst audiences. (10%)

Required Qualifications: BS in Cyber Security, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Information Assurance and Security, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field. One to five years of relevant experience in analyzing complex processes or systems. Demonstrated analytical, operational, problem solving, and organizational skills. Knowledge of Cyber Security strategies, mechanisms, including reverse engineering vulnerabilities and protections. Self-motivated team player with a proven ability to lead small teams. Exceptional problem solving and analytical ability. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present and discuss technical information to non-technical personnel and effectively interact with sponsors and fleet operational personnel.

Desired Qualifications: MS or PhD in in Cybersecurity, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Information Assurance and Security, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field. Five or more years experience in analyzing complex processes or systems including knowledge of reverse engineering protection technologies.

Special Working Conditions: Occasional domestic or foreign travel to Navy or government facilities.

Security: Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information up to the Secret level. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
