Computational Engineer/Scientist

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Computational Engineer/Scientist.

Job Summary: Develop and utilize physics-based models of complex thermal-fluidic and multi-scale mechanical systems, including but not limited to: heat/mass transport phenomena, fluid mechanics and fluid structure interactions, and high speed impact mechanics. In order to be successful an individual will have the ability to leverage extensive programing experience to utilize many different languages and platforms.

  1. Predictive modeling and simulation of materials and engineering systems across a variety of length and time scales (molecular, microscopic, and macroscopic scales). Code development and statistical analysis of data. (70%)

  2. Propose and develop new modeling frameworks for predicting the response of complex system including but not limited to structural, thermal, dynamic, ballistic, and blast loading conditions. (20%)

  3. Document analyses in memos and present results during stake holder reviews. Lead in proposal writing and development. (10%)

  • MS in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or equivalent with at least five years of experience
  • Expertise in utilizing physics-based modeling frameworks and the ability to contribute to their development.
  • Significant scientific/engineering programming experience, the ability to work in multiple languages (MATLAB, C/C , FORTRAN, Python, …) and algorithms commonly used in computational science and engineering.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to both work independently with little guidance and direction, and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • PhD in mechanical engineering, physics or other related discipline.
  • High-level understanding and experience in the development and use of simulation software in computational engineering and science.
  • Experience in large-scale software development. Experience using hardware accelerators (e.g. GPU's and Intel Phis) and familiarity with parallel programming techniques (MPI/OpenMP).
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to team based software development.

Special Working Conditions: Occasional travel, working in closed areas, extended hours
