Cognitive and Experimental Neuroscientist

The Research & Exploratory Development Department (REDD) at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) recently stood-up a new technical group, the Intelligent Systems Group (ISG). The ISG is a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers focused on developing the next generation of intelligent systems for the U.S. Government. The current emphasis of the ISG is on machine learning, autonomy, applied neuroscience, and robotics. The ISG is seeking a Cognitive and Experimental Neuroscientist.

Job Summary:

The Intelligent Systems Group within the Research and Exploratory Development Department is seeking a highly skilled and motivated senior neuroscientist to lead and/or support support a variety of applied neuroscience research efforts that uses non-invasive neural imaging tools (fMRI, EEG, MEG, or fNIRS) as an enabling technology for future paradigms of human-computer interactions and for investigation of knowledge representation and neurophysiological correlates of human behavior and cognition.

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

1) Develop, lead, and support efforts to develop new and implement existing experimental protocols utilizing non-invasive neural signal acquisition methods (e.g. fMRI, EEG, MEG, fNIRS) to validate the performance of software systems combining computational models and non-invasive functional neuroimaging related to cognition and human semantic knowledge representation. Maintain human subjects training certification and assist in maintaining and/or modifying materials for the Institutional Review Board (IRB) (40%)

2) Develop, lead, and support cognitive engineering efforts for understanding, developing, and evaluating mechanisms for human-machine collaboration and related human-human activities, focusing on scenarios with autonomous and robotic systems. Develop analytical frameworks and social models for anticipating human behavior, developing appropriate trust, optimizing decision-making structures and social organization, and improving human-machine interaction. Integrate cognitive engineering approaches and considerations into systems engineering processes and autonomous and robotic systems development. (20%)

3) Acquire data from human subjects in various testing models, design and implement data preprocessing and analysis routines, interpret and analyze neural signal data utilizing statistical and machine learning methods, and form conclusions (20%).

4) Work with sponsor organizations to communicate impact of research, develop concepts of operation with mission relevance. (10%)

5) Write scientific manuscripts and whitepapers summarizing results for conferences and peer review journals. (10%)

PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience, Cognitive Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, Human Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or equivalent. Experience in designing and conducting neuroimaging experiments using non-invasive neural signal acquisition devices such as MEG, fMRI, fNIRS, and EEG. Demonstrated ability in developing algorithms and neural signal processing tools using Matlab, Python and/or Java/C/C /C#. Experience in quantitative and qualitative data analysis methodologies, statistical analysis, and data management. Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to articulate complex technical issues effectively and appropriately for a wide range of audiences.

Desired Qualifications:

Demonstrated success with human subjects testing including IRBs. Experience in designing and conducting human subjects research focused on human interaction that may include direct observation, survey instruments, or biometric data acquisition devices. Expertise in the design, development and implementation of behavioral studies and human interaction studies, especially in groups of individuals or with humans and machines. Experience in developing analytical frameworks and models for helping to predict behavior in human-human and human-machine interactions. Expertise in the design, development and implementation of image processing algorithms/systems. Expertise in the design, development and implementation of behavioral and non-invasive neuroimaging paradigms. Expertise in the design, development and implementation of data processing algorithms/systems, utilization of signal processing tools, and experience with programming languages such as Matlab, Python, Java/C#/C /C#.
