Autonomous Systems Guidance and Control Engineer

Introduction:

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an Autonomous Systems Guidance and Control Engineer.

Job Summary: Responsible for designing physics-based models of a wide variety of multi-disciplinary systems and utilizing them for G&C algorithm development.

Duties:

  • Model Development – utilize existing or acquired systems design and operational expertise to build mathematical, logical, and visual models of complex deployed military and civilian systems. (40%)
  • Autonomous System Guidance and Control Analysis – develop guidance and control algorithms for autonomous systems leveraging simulation environment. (40%)
  • Visualization – coordinate with computer graphics developers to visualize systems and their interaction with the environment and other systems. (20%)

Required Qualifications:

B.S. in Physics or Engineering or other related technical discipline, and at least 2 years relevant professional level experience to include strong systems analysis skills. Experience in building physics based models along with specifying algorithms of those models for software engineers. Experience with MATLAB, C or other programming language. Exposure to LabVIEW and/or Simulink, and familiarity with simulation verification/validation processes. Background in developing guidance and control algorithms for a wide variety of autonomous systems. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Must work effectively in a team environment and be able to multi-task and support multiple development projects concurrently. The ideal candidate should have strong initiative, creativity, breadth of experience, and a desire to learn.

Desired Qualifications:

M.S. in Physics or Engineering. Fundamental knowledge of linear and nonlinear control methodologies as well as a background in autonomous system guidance. A general understanding of software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop development. Ability to research and develop expertise in a variety of systems (e.g., submarines, missiles, UAVs, UUVs, balloons). Familiarity with the agile development process.

Special Working Conditions: Some US and foreign travel will be required, not likely to exceed a few trips per year.

Security: Secret Clearanceis required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation andmust meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information upto the Secret level. Eligibility requirements include UScitizenship.
