Automotive Electronics and Software Engineer
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an Automotive Electronics and Software Engineer.
Job Summary: Seeking a creative and inventive individual to develop novel solutions to perform forensic analysis on automotive electronics systems. Work in a state of the art facility that combines a mechanic’s shop and an electrical engineering lab to instrument vehicle buses and interface with incorrectly documented components to extract and analyze forensic data. Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):
- Working independently and collaborating with teams, analyze vehicle infotainment networking protocols, CAN bus communications, real-time operating systems, and built-in diagnostics to characterize functionality and identify and retrieve forensic data. (60%)
- Design and develop prototype and limited-use software solutions involving custom hardware. (20%)
- Share knowledge by clearly articulating ideas through papers and presentations to technical staff and management. Take advantage of opportunities to participate in working groups, customer meetings, proposal writing, and conferences. (20%)

BS Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field. 4 years of experience with strong C and embedded software development skills and familiarity with scripting languages. Knowledge of software engineering best practices including maintainability, modularity, and reusability. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively as an individual and as part of a team. Experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, debuggers, emulators, compilers, and software debuggers. Ability to obtain a US government Secret security clearance.
MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field with 3 years of relevant experience in embedded systems software design and implementation. Proficiency with multiple microprocessor architectures and assembly languages with expertise in C/C software development. Working knowledge of automotive electronics, network architectures (CAN, vendor-specific protocols), real-time operating systems (QNX or similar), AutoSAR standards, and connectivity technologies (USB, Bluetooth, WiFi, cellular). Automotive industry experience highly desirable.
Security: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
