Analytical Chemist


The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an Analytical Chemist.

Job Summary:

Contribute to projects within the Applied Chemical Sensing Section of the Applied Chemistry and Physics group, including analytical chemistry and laboratory work to support funded projects.

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

  • Perform analytical chemistry measurements (MS, GC-MS, IMS, FTIR, multi-nuclear NMR, HPLC) (30%)
  • Perform reactivity studies of compounds or classes of compounds (15%)
  • Perform various material characterization studies (30%)
  • Prepare test articles for detector evaluation (15%)
  • Manage testing laboratory and support testing events (5%)
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations to sponsors (5%)

Required Qualifications:

BS in chemistry with a minimum of 2 years experience in analytical, physical organic chemistry or related fields. Expertise in multiple analytical techniques, including MS, GC-MS, IMS, HPLC, NMR, and FTIR.

Desired Qualifications:

MS in chemistry or related discipline with experience in materials analysis/characterization including dielectric property measurement, x-ray properties, basic synthesis and formulation – especially for materials related to homeland security applications. Experience in building, designing, and evaluating chemical detection systems as well as relevant programming experience (MATLAB, LABVIEW, etc.).

Special Working Conditions:

Occasional travel (local and non-local, CONUS), occasional closed room work (report preparation).
