Algorithm Analyst - Modeling and Simulation


The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is seeking an Algorithm Analyst to join a team that is creating innovative solutions to challenges facing the development of missile defense radar systems.

Job Summary: Participate in the evolution of radar system performance in missile defense through high fidelity modeling, simulation and analysis of US Navy and Missile Defense Agency ballistic missile defense (BMD) capable radars with a particular focus on radar data processing algorithms.

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

Duties will include some or all of these activities depending on project needs:

  • Perform requirements analysis for simulation of radar components/functions and fully document simulation requirements.
  • Analyze and understand radar performance relative to specified design to provide technical assessment and guidance during the software development process.
  • Develop Matlab scripts to simulate functions if needed for requirements/design analysis or to support test generation.
  • Develop component and integration level tests for simulation of radar components/functions.
  • Participate in software design reviews, code reviews.
  • Work with software developers to debug simulation as needed to successfully pass component and integration tests.
  • Perform verification and validation of simulation to include investigation of intended radar design, investigation of discrepancies and debugging/troubleshooting.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Math, Physics or equivalent with experience in engineering, analysis, modeling and simulation. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Desire to make a difference.

Desired Qualifications: Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Math, Physics or equivalent with three years experience in radar development and/or defense systems simulations. Familiarity with missile defense radar analysis, systems, and models. Experience with MATLAB and Java.

Special Working Conditions: Occasional travel to meet with government sponsors, contractors, and other laboratory organizations.

Security: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
