Summary: The Quality Engineer (QE) plays an integral quality team role in maintaining and improving the quality of products supplied by the Inline Plastics facility in UT. This includes responsibility of identifying, implementing, and measuring quality improvements, quality system compliance, process controls, failure analysis, risk management, supplier quality, and customer satisfaction. The QE will also support, and sometimes lead, the Internal Auditing, CAPA, SCAR, MSA, SPC, and complaints handling programs for the plant. This new role in the organization will be developed to utilize OpEx (Six Sigma / Lean) tools to improve yield, increase cost savings, and grow customer satisfaction. The Quality Engineer reports directly to the plant Quality Manager.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Drive quality improvement activities associated with manufacturing yields, customer return rates, customer complaints, quality system efficiencies, and in-process failures, using statistical analysis
  2. Report on plant metrics associated with quality
  3. Perform deviation investigations into quality issues involving design, production, and suppliers
  4. Participate in Item Qualification / Commercialization activities from protocol development, to testing, to a completed final report
  5. Support manufacturing initiatives associated with overall manufacturing quality
  6. Support internal QMS requirements around internal auditing, supplier quality, CAPAs, Management Review, complaints, etc
  7. Act as the backup Certified SQF (Safe Quality Food) Practitioner according to the SQF 2000 code
  8. Implement MSAs and SPC as applicable
  9. Work with the Design Quality team to transfer new products to production
  10. Work with Operations team to develop a PFMEA process
  11. Ensure compliance with Inline Plastics QMS and all relevant internal procedures and policies
  12. Assist with the implementation of current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Good Documentation Practices (GDPs) related to food contact packaging, and aligned to any FDA requirements
  13. Practices good housekeeping including clutter-free work area and general cleaning; follows FDA product safety standards, follows IPC product defense standards and complies with all SQF requirements
  14. Support qualifications of changes and co-ordinates associated change control activities
  15. Attend Lean Six Sigma training, achieve Certification, and use tools to improve quality, gain cost savings, and improve customer satisfaction (internal OpEx program)
  16. Imbed OpEx into the Quality and plant organization
  17. Facilitate customer complaints through adequate investigation and corrective actions / preventive actions
  18. Provide input to outsourced product performance requirements and recommend and implement applicable improvements (for products the plant purchases)
  19. Provide quality audit support of new suppliers and processes for new product
  20. Must be able to interact and build relationships with various departments and customers
  21. Promote a culture of continuous improvement and cost reduction
  22. Participate in annual Quality, OpEx, and/or Supplier forums
  23. Maintains regular and consistent attendance
  24. All other duties/functions as added or assigned

Requirements:
  1. BS degree or equivalent degree in Business Management, Engineering, or other related field of study
  2. 3+ years experience in Quality Assurance. ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) preferred
  3. Six Sigma or Lean certification or training preferred
  4. Must be able to work independently and keep abreast of quality issues on the production floor
  5. Must have a working knowledge of software programs - Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Project. Minitab experience is a plus
  6. Must have strong organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to proactively take initiative and complete tasks in a timely manner
  7. Must be able to effectively lead Change Management efforts
  8. Must have excellent oral/written communication skills
  9. Must have good problem solving skills, analytical and statistical problem solving tools. Must have strong collaboration, negotiating, conflict resolution, and teamwork skills with the ability to work well with both technical and non-technical personnel, and influence the direction of projects
  10. Must be a self-starter and the ability to plan and organize workload under minimum supervision
  11. Will be regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear
  12. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  13. Must have specific vision abilities which are required by this job and include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to hot or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
