Index Exchange is a rapidly growing tech company with over 500 employees worldwide with the objective of democratizing digital advertising and empowering publishers to produce high quality journalism and content across the web. We’re looking for a strong leader with broad and deep experience to join us as a Director of Engineering at Index Exchange. In this role you will grow, set vision for and oversee a group of highly skilled engineers in our newly minted Boston Engineering office. This means you will be leading, motivating, growing and improving Engineering Teams and Engineering leaders as they deliver incremental business value that has a direct impact on revenue, and therefore on the company’s success.
You’ll be working with a talented Engineering organization to enhance, improve and sometimes rebuild a software platform that handles over 80 billion requests everyday, more than the NY Stock Exchange does on a daily basis. We face a number of challenges, like low latency requirements, a trillion rows of data per day and a responsibility to be transparent and fair in all that we do.
First and foremost, you must be a true leader with great communication skills. We need someone who can really drive home the “why” to create a strong sense of purpose, a strong focus on business value and a strong sense of ownership; someone who can motivate teams and other leaders, who can help us live the values that make Agile work, and who can celebrate success and both own and use failure to fuel improvement. We need someone who can come in and make us even stronger.
This role will be unique, in that it provides an opportunity to expand Engineering into a new region. You’ll have the opportunity to set the culture, raise the bar and build an amazing team to tackle new challenges. You’ll be working side by side with our Product Leadership in Boston, and will have an opportunity to explore new channels of opportunity for Index Exchange in areas like Connected Television and OTT programmatic advertising channels.

Leadership: We need someone who can help us grow. That means hiring the right people, helping people grow both technically and personally, creating a strong sense of ownership at the individual and team level, mentoring more junior leaders and identifying and developing new leaders. We need you to have proven leadership ability and experience leading and managing both individual contributors and first-line managers
Independence: As someone charting a new path for us in Boston, we need someone who is independent with a strong sense of ownership. This person will be resourceful, will seek out information and insight rather than waiting for it. They will look to grow a great team that will work well in a family of remote Engineering offices, that all work together towards an aligned technical strategy.
Change Management: You’ll have the ability to manage organizational change and plan accordingly for them
Technical: You’ll have a passion for technology and a strong desire to learn. You also have experience driving the adoption of technical best practices and leading by examples.
Communication: As a leader you need to provide consistent and steady feedback to your team – both positive and constructively critical. To do this, you have experience using the right kinds of metrics in the right way. You will also need to keep all stakeholders and the leadership team well informed.
Agile Environment: You have experience in a truly Agile environment, which means going way beyond process and understanding and living the values that make Agile work
Multitasking: As a leader, you will have the opportunity to lead multiple concurrent initiatives. We want someone who’s able to juggle more than one thing at a time and know how to prioritize.
Here’s What You Have:
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent
- Experience in Ad Tech and CTV or OTT is a definite plus
- Experience with high volume, low latency distributed systems
- A solid understanding of DevOps
- The ability to work out of our Boston office
