Technical Business Development Manager

Job Description
We are looking for an ambitious business development manager to join the IBM Research team in the UK focusing on the emerging area of High Performance Computing, AI and Cognitive Solutions.

IBM Research represents one of the largest industrial research presences worldwide, with over 3,000 researchers undertaking research in a broad spectrum of application areas. IBM Research in the UK is based at the Hartree Centre, on the Daresbury SciTech Park and has the aim of transforming the competitiveness of UK industry by accelerating the adoption of High Performance Computing, AI and Cognitive Technologies and other advanced technologies.

The successful candidate will interact with the brightest minds in IBM and will help to bring ideas into scalable and robust outcomes for a wide range of UK (and International) companies.

Your role will involve working closely with IBM Research Scientists who work in areas that span Life Sciences, Genomics, Chemistry, AI and Machine Learning, Big Data and Science, Engineering and Manufacturing. The aim is to bring in revenue to IBM by using the technologies that have been created by our researchers, to both existing and new customers. In order to achieve this, you will need the ability to understand the research work underway, translate it into client value, then identify customers who would find it useful and set up new projects.

The variation in scientific and computational themes and projects requires someone with the necessary experience and oversight to manage not just their area of interest, but also successfully engage in other research areas, lead a team to succeed from a business and research output, and further understand personal and career development needs of their staff.

The responsibilities will be:

- Understanding deep technical content and translating that into business value
- Ability to understand the work that IBM Research does, translate that into value to clients, and have a good understanding of how IBM gets solutions into the hands of its clients - including hardware, software etc, and how we can make use of our Cloud capability
- Presenting and talking to customers about visions, solutions, pricing and contracts
- Putting together business cases for internal and external consumption
- Extensive networking, interact with Client Execs, Technical Architects, Researchers, Sellers
- Developing bids for further research funding in collaboration with IBM researchers and industries across the globe.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Strong technical background in HPC, Cloud, IT or one of our key research areas
  • Demonstrable client facing experience
  • Comfortable talking to customers about visions, solutions, pricing and contracts
  • At least 3 years experience of working directly with clients.
  • At least 3 years experience of working of delivering solutions to clients within IBM or outside IBM
  • Need to be tenacious and have a 'go getting' attitude; need to use their initiative and just get problems solved, in an area of IBM where we are breaking new ground
  • Excellent communication skills; both verbal and written


Preferred Tech and Prof Experience

  • Able to work with range of people with varied backgrounds.
  • Ability to rapidly understand new technical concepts.
  • Technical expertise with High Performance Computing, large scale IT systems, Cognitive Solutions, HPC or AI
  • First line management experience
