Strategic Analytics Consultant

Job Description
In this highly numerate role, you will be joining a company that has more mathematical scientists than the top 10 global universities combined. But we don't just recruit mathematicians; you need to be highly numerate and, equally importantly, be passionate about solving client's business problems by using analytics. Utilising your consulting skills, you will work with IBM colleagues and the client's own staff, from diverse backgrounds, to deliver a great analytical solution for the client.

As a Strategic Analytics Consultant you will be part of our Advanced Analytics consulting team. No two assignments will be the same -but you will mainly work at the client's site. You will be working across our offerings in Data Science, Optimisation, Strategic Analytics and Cognitive. As you gain more experience we will help you grow your skills and specialise in one of these areas. You may be communicating with the client to understand their problem; collecting data and analysing it; specifying, building, using or implementing a model or presenting your analysis and recommendations to the client.

You'll likely have a BSc/ MSc or PhD degree in a relevant quantitative field (such as statistics, operations research, computer science, economics or science) and will have received at least the equivalent of a 2.1. At the same time, you'll have a good understanding of business challenges in the industries you have worked in and you are able to explain analytical insights to a non-technical audience. Your key skills include:

  • Consulting skills to be able to take a business problem that is potentially vaguely defined and determine an appropriate analytical approach to solving it
  • Strong communication skills and business acumen, including a feeling for data visualization and experience in presenting complex information to business stakeholders in a compelling way
  • Experience with analytics use cases in your industry through applying modelling techniques, be it through optimisation, customer analytics, network analytics, asset analytics, pricing analysis, financial modelling, complex business cases or another related domain area.
  • Proven experience as Consultant, Data Scientist, Researcher or Analyst and you'll be used to working with client business functions on various levels.
  • Hands-on experience in at least one of the leading advanced analytics tools (e.g. R, Python, SPSS, SAS, CPLEX or MATLAB) as well as exposure to Excel.
  • Exposure to methods of acquiring and manipulating data (SQL, APIs, Python)
  • Experience working in a project environment

  • Ensuring that the benefits used to justify investment are realistic and the necessary actions are taken to turn those benefits into reality - Benefits Realisation
  • Understand how the departments are performing and what actions need to be taken to maximise performance - Strategic Performance Management
Your logical thinking, data analysis skills, and modelling expertise in tools from Excel, VBA and Access to using the range of analytical software recently purchased by IBM, as part of its large investment in BA, including SPSS (Statistics), iLOG (Mathematical Programming) and UNICA (Campaign Management) will be applied to an array of complex business problems and will see you provide astute insights into how clients' businesses can work. Tailored training will be provided as required for each assignment.

As part of the wider team, you'll have the ability to harness advances in information technology, data management and analytical techniques to improve business performance. You'll help clients to maximise this competitive advantage through the implementation of analytics to support key business processes. You'll need to be independent, influential and inspirational with people - both clients and colleagues.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Proven experience as Consultant, Data Scientist, Researcher or Analyst and you'll be used to working with client business functions on various levels.
