*This position resides in Ottawa, Ontario and is a 4 or 8 (co-op) month work term commencing January 2019. It is mandatory that all applicants are enrolled in full-time studies at a post-secondary institution and returning to full-time studies upon completion of the work term.

Come design and innovate with us on the open-source OpenJ9 code base at eclipse.org/openj9. We want to
collaborate with you and other software developers who are enthusiastic about working at the language runtime level. We are an agile team working on many different technologies including the IBM Java Virtual Machine. Over the course of your term you will gain a deeper understanding of programming languages in your development role. You will learn about garbage collection, interpretation, virtualization and platform exploitation, all in the context of virtual machines for interpreted languages.
The development environment is predominantly C and C++, but a proficiency and willingness to go down to the assembly language level is encouraged. Polyglot skills are an asset, as we work in a variety of dynamic scripting languages. OpenJ9 developers contribute to all aspects of software development including initial design and development, performance analysis, tuning and testing, as well as assisting our customer support teams with problem determination and delivering fixes..
While the team environment is highly collaborative, individuals are also expected to operate with a level of autonomy and responsibility that leads to quality software practices and delivering business results.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise
- Co-op or internship program enrollment is mandatory
- Knowledge of the software development cycle
Preferred Tech and Prof Experience
A healthy combination of the following expertise is desired:
- Experience with Windows and/or Linux operating systems
- Experience with C, C++, Java, and/or scripting languages
- Knowledge of assembly language programming
