Master Thesis Autumn 2018: An AI application for Reviewing and Ranking

Job Description

A general challenge for organizations such as Foundations or Trusts that provide awards to promote scientific research is to manage the large number of often complex award applications, and to find ways of ranking them towards the defined criteria.

The Nobel Sustainability Trust has expressed interest in developing an AI assistance program to more effectively and efficiently match applicants and nominations with the criteria set up for its Sustainability Award, a prize which will be awarded scientists and/or institutions who have made important discoveries in the renewable technology fields or whose discoveries and innovation could lead to reduction in pollution and global warming.

The purpose of this project is to create a proof of concept of an application capable of identifying and ranking applicants by their relevance to a given research topic within the field of sustainability. The goal is to show the viability of such an application, and to test it fully during the first award process 2019/2020.
The development of the application could be based on the work delivered by students at Chalmers University of Technology in 2016, "EIRA - An Application for Finding and Ranking Researchers"; this would deepen the development of the AI assistant that was developed as part of their project. This project could also make a fresh start with a new approach.
About the Nobel Sustainability Trust: The Nobel Sustainable Trust, founded by five members of the Swedish Nobel Family, was established in Switzerland to be a proactive response to environmental challenges and bringing public awareness to the issues of pollution and clean energy and encouraging change. By participating in, and supporting the Trust, its programs and activities, the student(s) will be taking a stand for the future of humanity as a species on a life-sustaining planet. The Trust supports research and developments by presenting an award to individuals and organisations, to be handed out at the NST conferences in the years ahead. IBM would like to support the NST by developing an AI evaluation program in cooperation with student/s.
Technology: IBM Watson won over humans in Jeopardy 2011 by understanding the natural language (voice-to-text) and then deriving accurate answers to complex questions. This was possible due to several components working together e.g. NLP (Natural Language Processing), HPC (High Performance Computing), ML (Machine Learning), QAT (Question Answering Technology) etc. Nowadays, this AI technology has been applied to multiple industries like healthcare, transportation, energy, customer service etc. The AI domain is growing significantly every day.
Machine Learning can unlock new patterns, trends, and insights from across all kinds of data, both structured and unstructured. This technology will be core in this project and the AI assistant will be utilizing several of the functionalities and services available on the IBM Cloud platform.

We would like the following to be addressed in the work:
• Study the possibilities with applying an AI assistant for The Nobel Sustainability Trust to support in the award process and discuss its relevance
• What are the possibilities and risks with this technology for this usage
• Are there limitations that needs to be considered
• Test the technology by designing and building an AI assistant in IBM Cloud that can evaluate and rank applications, according to the provided criteria
• Evaluate the AI assistant's capabilities and limitations for evaluating applications and ranking them
• If possible, evaluate more than one solution alternatives against each other.

The student/s will be supported by IBM and the Nobel Sustainability Trust throughout the project. We prefer to engage a team of two students for this work, rather than one. You are free to apply as a pair (each submitting an application and cross-referencing to the desired partner) or as an individual (in which case we would match you with a partner in the selection process).

The work should be conducted mainly at IBMs offices in Kista, Sweden, but some amount of remote work can also be agreed with the thesis supervisors.

IBM Sweden does not pay salary for Master's Thesis work.

  • A keen interest of how IT and specifically AI can be utilized to solve problems
  • An understanding or interest in sustainability and environmental challenges
  • Machine Learning / AI courses and/or work experience
