Your Role and Responsibilities

IBM Procurement is responsible for the effective acquisition of goods and services that are used by internal business unit clients and deployed on external customer accounts.

The Procurement Specialist - IT role requires a driven and solutions orientated Procurement professional that can effectively execute sourcing events, drive cost reductions, negotiate supplier terms and conditions, manage supplier relationships and collaborate with internal business unit clients to meet the business needs.

The key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • In line with IBM company policy and IBM procurement process and procedure and disciplines of the strategic sourcing process - manage to and provide leadership to the strategic sourcing teams in procuring technology products to effectively conduct business; including the reduction of total cost and business risks, improving the quality of goods and services purchased, and meet agreed timeframes and cost saving targets.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to develop and optimise individual and team capability in the following commodities: hardware, hardware maintenance, connectivity and telecommunication and must be able to demonstrate management capabilities for leading teams across regions.
  • Provides guidance regarding the development of proposals, strategies and initiatives for the most complex, highest risk contracts and business relationships. Directs departments/projects responsible for administering contracts, monitoring performance and ensuring corrective actions are taken to assure IBM's business objectives of quality, cost, availability and/or conformance to acquisition and business practices.
  • Discharge the basic management responsibilities common to all IBM managers. Assumes additional responsibilities as assigned.


    Strong knowledge within a category or cross category supported by market intelligence, international and local sourcing and business principles for procurement, business and contract law, licensing, finance and accounting. Requires extensive, broad based business and management experience in procurement and related functions including project management techniques. Support the team on vendor and supplier selection process based on price, quality, support, capacity and reliability, develop and maintain strategic relationships with Country, AP and Global Procurement Teams, suppliers and IBM key stakeholders.

  • Communication/Negotiation:
    Frequent contacts with IBM key stakeholders and suppliers at all management levels, including CEO's to negotiate the most complex and sensitive business issues requiring a balance of assertiveness and tact. Conducts complex negotiations with all levels of other party management on critical, sensitive and strategic issues, which may involve global customers and/or suppliers. Represents IBM to other parties consistent with IBM policy and practice for purposes of effective business relationship management.
    This is a varied position that demands excellent negotiation and communication skills, strategic planning and organizational ability as well as strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    Strong interpersonal, oral and written skills required to undertake daily activities. Comprehensive analytical skills required recognizing the need for and developing new business methods and techniques.
  • Problem Solving:
  • Ensures appropriate business controls and measurements are in place to effectively monitor the procurement or contracting process and prevent the loss or misuse of physical or intellectual assets. Provides acquisition and business advice and counsel to executive management on critical and sensitive relationship issues and presents alternatives and risks associated with these issues. Directs the development of strategic programs across the supplier base that leads to continuous improvement agreements.
  • Contribution/Leadership:
    Directs the development and implementation of major Global, AP and contry procurement strategic initiatives including customer solution strategies that have a significant impact on multiples sites, regions business units or major commodities. Provides guidance to on-going department/project activities such as market analysis, supplier competitive evaluations and selection, contract negotiations and assessments of supplier performance. Reviews highly complex business cases which lead to final sourcing or partnership decisions. Is instrumental in the business process throughout all phases of the acquisition and contracting life cycle including: market analysis evaluation and selection (sourcing, negotiations, terms, contract execution), relationship management (contract performance, compliance, delivery, quality and payment) and validation (performance assessment, asset reconciliation and close-out).

    Activities have a substantial impact on IBM's revenue and profitability. Directs the development of strategies, proposals and initiatives for the most complex, highest risk contracts. Significantly influences executive level management on procurement activities and is held accountable for all assigned contract revenue responsibilities. Directs actions that may affect corporate-wide policies, practices, processes and procedures.
    Activities have a substantial impact on IBM's revenue and profitability. Directs the development of strategies, proposals and initiatives for the most complex, highest risk contracts. Significantly influences executive level management on procurement activities and is held accountable for all assigned contract revenue responsibilities. Directs actions that may affect corporate-wide policies, practices, processes and procedures.

Reporting Line

  • Reports to AP Director of Procurement and functional guidance from the ANZ Procurement Market Leader.

Required Professional and Technical Expertise

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree

  • Minimum 8 years Procurement experience in a corporate environment

  • Previous People HR management

Preferred Professional and Technical Expertise

Highly developed and demonstrated experience in the following:
