Digital Health and Analytics within Humana is dedicated to transform members' health experience and Humana's services using technology and analytics. We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist who will design studies and utilize cutting-edge predictive modeling techniques, test rigorous hypotheses, and turn data and insights into actionable plans. Being part of talented team of data scientists with broad skills and applications, the Senior Data Scientist will work cross-functionally and collaboratively with teams across the enterprise through innovative R&D, machine learning, and cutting-edge platforms. The scope of our work includes forecasting, predictive modeling, designing business experiments, and ROI studies. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience on healthcare data, demonstrated innovative and creative methods for overcoming testing constraints, as well as successfully applying machine learning techniques to address business needs.


The Senior Data Scientist uses mathematics, statistics, machine learning, business analysis, and technology to transform high volumes of complex data into advanced analytic solutions. The Senior Data Scientists' work assignments involve moderately complex to complex issues where the analysis of situations and data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. The Senior Data Scientist uses machine learning and artificial intelligence to develop sophisticated models, using both structured and unstructured data sets for analysis.


This is a unique opportunity for a motivated individual to influence Humana's vision to provide coordinated, integrated care via multiple innovative solutions. The Senior Data Scientist creates reports, projections, models, and presentations to support business strategy and tactics. This role influences department's strategy, contributes to the decision making on complex issues regarding technical approach for project components, and work on model building use cases with minimal supervision. Exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to assignments. As a Senior Data Scientist, you will:

  • Apply advanced analytic techniques and machine learning to develop world class models that solve business problems
  • Use supervised and unsupervised machine learning tools, statistical analysis, and predictive modeling to deliver business insights to prospects and customers
  • Assist in customer engagement management, requirements definition, project scoping, timeline management, and results documentation to ensure professional and high-quality relationship
  • Work directly with aligned business partners and assist in requirements definition, project scoping, timeline management, and results documentation to ensure professional relationship management
  • Collaborate with multiple cross-functional teams to understand the business needs, identify any operational barriers and issues, and propose and facilitate resolutions
  • Recommend, design, and develop actionable analytic solutions for key business problems through in-depth investigations of healthcare utilization trends and outcomes
  • Work directly with customers to educate them on "moving beyond BI' and training their internal resources to execute advanced forms of analytics
  • Collaborate with the academic and business community to develop new techniques and to contribute to research in the area of advanced analytics on large databases

Role Essentials
  • Master's Degree in Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering or related field and 2 years of related experience
  • 3 years' technical experience
  • Experience working with and analyzing various types of data using R, Python or similar software
  • Experience in using mathematics, statistics, modeling, experimental study design, business analysis, and technology to transform high volumes of complex data into advanced analytic solutions
  • Experience using machine learning techniques such as neural networks, random forest, etc.
  • History of solving problems, creating solutions and driving change within a team
  • Naturally curious and comfortable with ambiguity and demonstrate critical thinking
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication skills, with a proven ability to translate complex methodologies and analytical results to non-technical business insights
  • Strong interpersonal and consulting skills

Role Desirables
  • PhD Degree in Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering or a related field
  • 5+ years' technical experience
  • Experience in Big Data environment specifically PySpark, Scala, or Microsoft Azure
  • Experience in deep learning, natural language processing, and recommendation systems
  • Work experience in health care and/or insurance industries

Additional Information:

This position is based on either Humana's headquarters in Louisville-KY or Humana's Studio-H in Boston-MA.
