The Paralegal 1 performs a variety of law-related tasks such as legal research, drafting legal documents and other related duties. The Paralegal 1 work assignments are often straightforward and of moderate complexity.

Responsibilities

The Paralegal 1, in support of Humana's Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug plan business, analyzes and performs reviews of communications, documents, contracts and business initiatives for compliance with relevant laws, regulations and statutes. Performs legal research. Identifies relevant statutes, regulations, judicial decisions, and other pertinent material. Understands own work area professional concepts/standards, regulations, strategies and operating standards. Understands business strategies, goals, and programs and applies regulatory requirements to those strategies, goals, and programs. In consultation with attorney, provides guidance to business teams regarding legal and regulatory requirements and develops creative solutions and options for business areas to meet requirements and business needs. Makes decisions regarding own work approach/priorities, and follows direction. Work is managed and often guided by precedent and/or documented procedures/regulations/professional standards with some interpretation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Effective interpersonal, teaming and communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (emphasis in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Adobe Professional and Lexis/Nexis
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Strong attention to detail and proven organizational skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability to complete multiple tasks within designated deadlines and adjust priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be passionate about contributing to an organization focused on continuously improving consumer experiences

Preferred Qualifications

  • Corporate law or compliance department or law firm paralegal experience preferably with experience in medical or Medicare/Medicaid insurance or other highly regulated industry.
  • With supervision from the assigned attorney, applies government regulations in relevant area, reviews, and analyzes a broad range of documents, communications, and agreements. Has exceptional analytical skills.

Work-At-Home Requirements:

  • WAH requirements: Must have the ability to provide a high speed DSL or cable modem for a home office. Associates or contractors who live and work from home in the state of California will be provided payment for their internet expense.
  • A minimum standard speed for optimal performance of 25x10 (25mpbs download x 10mpbs upload) is required.
  • Satellite and Wireless Internet service is NOT allowed for this role.
  • A dedicated space lacking ongoing interruptions to protect member PHI / HIPAA information
