The Corporate Communications team at Humana is responsible for leading and executing the strategies for external stakeholder, media relations, employee communications, public affairs, issues, and crisis communications, enhancing, and building the Humana Brand. The team plays a central role in promoting Humana's brand promise while enhancing its reputation across various corporate stakeholders. Against that backdrop, we are looking for an accomplished communications leader to join our team as Director, Internal Communications. This position can be located anywhere within the lower 48 states.

The Director, Internal Communications leads a team to develop integrated internal communications plans for enterprise-wide change and transformation, issues and crisis management, mergers and acquisitions, and other major corporate priorities and announcements. This role requires someone who can make critical business decisions and partner with stakeholders -- including executive leadership -- to implement clear, consistent internal communications strategies and messaging. The Director will play a key leadership role in driving large-scale communications campaigns/initiatives and is responsible for directing a broad range of communication activities across a variety of channels to maximize messaging opportunities and effectiveness.

Responsibilities

Position Overview
  • Accountable for communications planning and delivery of enterprise-wide internal communications strategies related to change, M&A, and other major corporate priorities.
  • Leads long-term communications strategy development for Humana's adoption of customer-centric ways of working, continuously sharing recommendations with leaders and cross-functional stakeholders that enable successful transformation
  • Works across the enterprise, serving as a strategic advisor who shapes the communications strategy and tactics for campaigns that have broad impact with internal and external stakeholders
  • Supervises a team of experienced communications professionals who craft, design and distribute communications solutions ranging in size, scope and impact
  • Influences at all levels of the organization and with other communicators to gain alignment on communications vision, objectives, goals and measures
  • Serves as thought partner on strategy and execution of organizational change initiatives, providing communications support for multiple stakeholder groups
  • Proactively identifies opportunities to elevate Humana's leaders and corporate narrative to deepen associate connection to and understanding of company milestones, as well as ways they contribute
  • Leadership and management of cross-functional projects, often serving as the primary point of contact and decision maker for large-scale communications activities
  • Leverage data and analytics to inform strategy recommendations and establish appropriate metrics and KPIs to measure performance


Key Responsibilities
  • Leads the development of integrated communications strategies and multi-layered content/solutions that advance Humana's customer-centric approach, business objectives and company transformation efforts
  • Develops and oversees communications planning and programming for enterprise-wide initiatives, such as mergers and acquisitions, crisis events, business development, organizational design, and company transformation
  • Coordinates lines of communication with executive and senior leadership, segment communicators and impacted stakeholder groups to create consistent, compelling communications/storytelling packages across the enterprise
  • Guides teams in managing high-volume of communications and tight deadlines without compromising quality or outcomes
  • Liaises with peers, other segment communicators, Legal, Investor Relations, Corporate Development and other stakeholders to implement proven communications approaches
  • Shares communications best practices with internal stakeholders and other communicators
  • Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with senior leadership, key business partners and external resources (i.e. management consultant firms, outside agencies, acquisition companies, etc.) to share best practices and put greater discipline around communications strategy and tactics
  • Researches and deploys innovative communications tools, technology and approaches to elevate the effectiveness of communications


Key Candidate Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience (typically 10+ years) in employee communications or public relations with a major (i.e. Fortune 500) corporation or national PR/marketing firm. This person will also demonstrate the ability to plan, lead and execute integrated communications strategies for internal/external audiences. He/she will be a creative, clear strategic thinker with strong strategic planning, writing, editing and problem solving skills. The successful candidate will also be adept at taking complex information and simplifying it into simple, engaging messages for varied audiences or stakeholder groups. Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in communications, public relations or related field.

In addition to the above, the following technical skills and personal attributes are also sought:
  • Experience and understanding in change management principles, methodologies and tools
  • Ability to manage multiple business areas and projects simultaneously, including prioritization, issues resolution and execution of strategic plans
  • Demonstrated ability to lead high-performing teams in a variety of work settings (e.g. hybrid, remote, in office, etc.)
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including the polish, poise and executive presence needed for alignment and cross-functional support
  • Strong focus on identifying and deploying process improvements across Corporate Communications team and with business partners to develop policy and governance standards, as well as operational efficiencies
  • Deep understanding of communications measurement and channels, with an ability to leverage a variety of reporting tools to make data-driven decisions that improve the effectiveness of internal communications
  • Foster an open, inclusive and diverse community at Humana
  • Proactive, flexible and positive attitude that motivates and inspires team to deliver on desired goals
  • Education or Certification in Organizational Change Management
  • Proven track record of adopting communications best practices and innovation
  • Advanced skills using O365 suite, including Teams and SharePoint, and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign)
