Hudson River Trading

Technical Product Manager

3+ months agoNew York, NY

Hudson River Trading is growing our new Technical Product Management team! This is an awesome opportunity to build this function from the ground up. You will impact how teams within HRT strategically collaborate to drive the company forward and help create the future of trading. Because our user base is so technical, we’re seeking candidates with serious technical chops. Responsibilities will involve debugging and programming, so a CS degree or significant programming experience is required to succeed in this role!

Our Algorithmic Development team (we call them the Algo team) builds the predictive models and strategies that drive our trading. These models are generated and back-tested in our distributed compute cluster; we have a highly-skilled team of engineers writing the libraries and tools that the Algo team uses to generate strategies and interact with the cluster. As our Product Manager, you will be responsible for the success and improvement of these Algo-facing tools (the “product”) at HRT, collaborate with the Software Development team to meet Algo’s needs (the “users”), And help set technical direction for the research software and tooling that support Algo workflows.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • You will dig deeply into the Algo team’s user experience and workflows to determine which new tools or improvements to existing tools will be the most impactful to HRT.
  • You will gather the Algo team’s requirements through surveys, conversations, feedback sessions, and automated reporting. You will become adept at anticipating the needs of HRT’s Algo Developers.
  • You will work closely with Software Engineers across Algo, Trading Technology, and Research & Development to set technical strategy and prioritize development work.
  • You will take the lead on our 2-year strategic plans for critical tooling and Algo-facing resources.

  • You have 3-5 years of product management experience working in a highly technical environment.
  • You have a strong foundation working as a software developer that supports your product management experience.
  • You have demonstrated success in your current role and/or demonstrated advancement in career trajectory.
  • You are a “people person.” Now, this doesn’t have to mean that you love to chit-chat with strangers in grocery stores or elevators (although if that is the case, you’ll have lots of fun in our cafeteria lunch line). For us, it means that you are empathetic, an active listener, and value building collaborative and sustainable relationships.
  • You have a curious disposition and want to know things. You constantly itch to discover the “why.”
  • When it comes to dealing with pressure, you are as cool as a cucumber. You thrive working in fast-paced environments with rapidly shifting priorities.

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or another technical field.
  • Solid understanding of data structures and algorithms.
  • Substantial Python experience.
  • You know your way around a Linux command line.
  • Strong verbal and communication skills.
  • Strong technical design and documentation skills.
  • Fantastic time management and task prioritization skills.
  • Critical thinking skills; able to take feedback and transform it into strategic action.
