Underwriting Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY:

The underwriting assistant is an entry-level position that provides administrative and technical support services to managers and underwriters of the company's worker compensation insurance division. The position contributes to the achievement of department goals relating to growth, profit, renewal retention, and producer/client management and service. Excellent communication skill (verbal and written) and a strong mathematical aptitude are requisite for success.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and manage New Business mailboxes
  • Enter new and renewal applications in rating systems within established service standards
  • Set up submissions in agency management system
  • Order Loss Control
  • Comfortable with variable work volume (medium to high)
  • Work with minimum supervision in completing tasks
  • Prepare and distribute renewal offers to underwriters and agents
  • Accept and deliver electronic documents from companies and customers
  • Phone backup
  • Listen carefully and comprehensively to customers' communications
  • Return customer inquiries promptly and professionally
  • Communicate policy changes and cancellation notices to agents
  • Enter/invoice new business, renewal business, endorsements and final audits
  • Process and invoice cancellation and reinstatement notices
  • Develop and request information from customers and insurance companies
  • Explain products, services and benefits to customers
  • Participate as necessary on special committees and projects

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience and background
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated command of the English Language
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to organize work; perform with time constraints and be self-directed
  • Self-starter, creative and teamwork oriented
  • Mathematical aptitude
  • Insurance industry experience, especially workers' compensation insurance a plus
  • Ability to adapt to significant change (procedures, processes and techniques)
