New Product Introduction (NPI) Product Engineer

The role of the New Product Introduction (NPI) product engineer is to enable the launch of new products and ensure that the manufactured product will meet customer expectations. Meeting customer expectations requires that:

• The customer expectation is well understood and translated into specifications
• Correct specifications for manufacturing and design are selected during product development to meet those expectations
• Product is characterized and issues resolved for the factory to manufacture the product to meet these expectations. This includes adjusting specifications if they are too conservative.
• Specifications are altered, based on warranty return data and company financial goals, to meet the warranty and product cost goals, which is a measure of how well HP is meeting customer expectations.


The primary functions for the product engineer is to do the following:

During a program:

  • Identify the risks early in the program and determine the test methods needed to characterize the product to ensure we meet the end-customer needs. This is especially true in any product or process NUD's (New, Unique and Different)
  • Throughout the program, characterize the product to ensure we understand the risks and work with the teams to eliminate the risks or determine the long-term plan to reduce the risks
  • Problems often occur in the organizational seams. The product engineer explores the “white spaces” to ensure we have robust processes
  • Lead the qualification of the product
  • Lead issue resolution in partnership with the organization
  • Negotiate specifications end-to-end to ensure we have a shippable product. This includes specs at the incoming materials suppliers through the printer division
  • Manage the specifications, spec linkages, spec justifications throughout the program
  • Ensure we are capturing knowledge and robust change management. This includes the creation of Design Intents, Knowledge Capture management, and ensure we are documenting our learnings
  • Drive any transfer activities to the high volume factories
  • Lead issue resolution in partnership with the organization
  • At the end of the program, accept Engineering Responsibility (ER)

For Released Products:
  • Lead issue resolution to ensure we resolve problems for our end-customer
  • Drive the quality and reliability data reviews to ensure we continue to ship robust products
  • Drive qualification of change and are primary to ensure we challenge changes to ensure we continue to meet the end-customer expectation
  • Complete margins to ensure we have a clear path to stability. This includes working with the incoming materials suppliers
  • Drive changes to the specification as we learn about issues at the end-customer or recognize that the specifications are too tight
  • Continue improvement cycles to improve audits, including stopping audits due to lack of issues
    Essential Requirements
  • B.S. or M.S., Engineering, Physics or Materials Science
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with a broad population (operators, technicians, managers, design teams, suppliers)
  • Demonstrated communication skills, both written and verbal and ability to present in groups in a coherent manner
  • Demonstrated ability to learn
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
    • Think outside the box for the solution set
    • Exposure to different issue resolution skills
  • Be able to apply first principles to the issues at hand and provide the logical steps to resolution
    • Broad understanding of chemistry and physics as well as deeper knowledge of area of expertise
    • High degree of common sense
  • Demonstrated ability to assess risk of a new product using industry-standard tools
  • Demonstrated ability to translate a potential problem to create test tools and methods to create audits and characterization testing in order to:
    • Quantify risks
    • Provide short-loop test methods and tools to allow risk assessment without fully integrated testing
    • Managing product quality in the factory
    • Correlation to the end customer or business requirements
  • Excellent teamwork skills

Desired Requirements
  • Skilled at understanding design basics and ability to do CAD
    • Able to read 2D part drawings and correlate to product quality requirements
    • Provide data analysis
    • GD&T understanding
  • In depth understanding of:
    • Adhesives & Materials
    • Statistics and data analysis tools (JMP)
    • Tool design & controls
