HP Security Lab Intern

We are looking for highly-skilled, motivated, and driven students to apply for research internships at the HP Inc. Security Lab in Bristol, UK, and help us advance the state-of-the-art in system security. Multiple internships across diverse topics are available. From researching cyber-resilient system architectures, to designing security for next generation cyber-physical systems, from the Internet of All Things, to emerging 3D printing ecosystems. Our researchers work with HP's global business units on security innovation for a safer digital world.

Internships will start between March and July 2017, for a preferred duration of 5-6 months.

We welcome applications from full time students with the relevant skills and experience at late Undergraduate, Masters and PhD level.

What will I learn?

Interns will develop excellent research engineering skills, applied to significant security challenges. You will be directly supervised by outstanding, highly experienced researchers, and will be an integral, visible and valued member of the Security Lab. You will have the chance to present your work within the lab, may contribute to working papers, and gain recognition from our global business unit partners.

What will I work on?

The research agenda in the Security Lab is broad, and we are constantly innovating across device security, infrastructure security and security management. You will work on a specific project in one of these areas that is the best match between your skills and our interests.

With more computing power moving to the 'edge' of the network, endpoint devices are the target of more attacks but also the place where we need to build-in more effective security measures. The Security Lab has a diverse research portfolio that pursues security innovation for current and future endpoint devices in HP's portfolio, including today's PCs and mobile devices, printers, and 3D printers.

For example, our device security work has made significant advances in designing security architectures that not only aim to protect devices, but also provide built-in mechanisms such that systems may autonomously detect and recover from unauthorized or malicious breaches. With such architectures, we aim to leverage strong hardware security to achieve cyber-resilience properties at a system level.

In our infrastructure security team we develop new paradigms for securing the IoT/endpoint device eco-systems.We focus our work on securing user-to-device authentication, device-to-device communications, and also designing secure provisioning and flexible management architectures that support an increasingly diverse range of devices.

In security management, our work addresses the ongoing management of security in device eco-systems, detecting and re-mediating threats operationally. For example, some of our work focuses on operating our own malware lab to perform analysis of malware samples, but also to test our designs for detecting capabilities.

What skills do I need?

We are looking for motivated and driven individuals, who enjoy team work, have an excellent grounding in IT, computer science and engineering – theory and practice, and a keen interest in system security research.Your specialist knowledge might include: strong programming skills, system software architecture, knowledge of security concepts and cryptography, familiarity with networking and distributed system architectures, virtualization technologies, or malware analysis.

Please make your skills and expertise clear in your CV and covering letter.
